Performance Task Mockumentary Film Analysis Write a film review about critically-acclaimed documentary film Bayaning Third World by Mike De Leon guided by the following parts to critique the film analytically. The movie link was already provided in our LMS. Paragraph I: Introduction (5 points) Short background of the movie. Paragraph II: First Body (5 points) Central idea/issues revolving around the film. Paragraph III: Second Body (10 points) Important points that where given emphasis (Give at least three and explain each briefly) Paragraph IV: Third Body (10 points) Implications/importance/significance of these points on heroism and greatness of Rizal. Paragraph V: Conclusion (10 points) Personal reflections on the film. (Additional points for a creative but relevant title. Yep. Still applies. ☺)

The Hesitancy of Rizal’s Heroism in the Lens of Philippine Cinema Bayaning 3rd World is a 1999 Philippine mockumentary film directed and written by Mike de Leon and Clodualdo del Mundo Jr. It investigates the heroism of Philippine national hero Jose Rizal, focusing on his alleged retraction of his writings against the Catholic Church in the Philippines during the country's Spanish colonization. It tells the story of two filmmakers who attempted to make a film based on the life of José Rizal. Before they do so, they attempt to conduct an investigation into the heroism of the Philippine national hero. His alleged retraction of his anti-Roman Catholic Church views during the Spanish regime in the Philippines is of particular interest which he expressed primarily through his two novels Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo. The investigation was primarily conducted by "interviewing" key individuals in Rizal's life, including his mother Teodora Alonso, his siblings Paciano, Trinidad, and Narcisa, his love interest and alleged wife Josephine Bracken, and the Jesuit priest who allegedly witnessed Rizal's retraction, Vicente Balaguer. To get to the bottom of the problem, the two filmmakers would eventually "interview" Rizal himself. According to the short film, Dr. Rizal chose to be a Christian again, retracting all of his writings against the Christian church and Spain, in order to marry Josephine Bracken, who was the mother of Pepe's child. The main issue with what was thought to be written by Dr. Rizal was the signature, which rendered it null and void. For most of us, all of this was puzzling and mysterious. We know that he fought against the Spaniards until his death, and he did not retract all of his works for the Filipino people, to help us escape tyranny.

The first point is Rizal's Retraction. The retraction has always been polarized between those who believe the documents are genuine and those who believe the story was fabricated and Rizal's penmanship was forged by a religious-political conspiracy. There are two possibilities here. The first is the scene in which Rizal's hand is shown writing the retraction with a feathered pen. The second is more intriguing: it depicts hooded monks seated in a row, assembly line-style forging copies of the retraction, with one of them photocopying the forged documents. The representation is humorously satirical, and it immediately calls into question the veracity of the retraction documents, which are too obviously farcical to be credible. Then there's his romance with Josephine Bracken. This is clearly one of the film's focal points. Was Rizal married to Josephine? If what Josephine is saying is true, it will only serve to prove that the retraction is correct. Finally, is Rizal truly opposed to the revolution? or he simply dislikes the fact that they are resorting to violence?

Even though two priests claim that Rizal signed the retraction, we cannot change the fact that they were the ones who truly wanted Rizal to return to the Catholic Church. Furthermore, it is implied in the film that Rizal's signature was simple to imitate. I believed that whether there was a retraction or not, he was still a wonderful person. The fact that he died for his beloved country is compelling evidence. Then there's his relationship with Josephine; whether they're married or not, I'm sure he loves her, and she loves him back. The film also addressed Josephine's issue, claiming that she was having an affair with a priest and that his stepfather was molesting her. That controversy demonstrated Rizal's greatness; he truly loved her despite her flaws and mistakes. Finally, he expresses his thoughts on the revolution. Whether he agrees with it or not, he wrote two novels that changed the lives of Filipinos. These novels are still being studied by Filipino students today. He may not have used violence, but he made the correct decision in opening the eyes of the Filipinos. This film's uniqueness appeals to me. It is not a typical film in Philippine cinema, and the storyline is also unique, which I greatly appreciated. I'm not sure about a lot of the issues that were addressed there. I was enlightened in such a way that I am still perplexed. There are still many questions that no one can answer except Rizal. I did learn a lot, and I was curious about him and his life. While watching the film, I realized that the Filipinos had high expectations for Jose Rizal. They want him to be perfect, as if he were a saint, which I found amusing. Rizal, like us, is a human being. He made a lot of mistakes, which I think is fine and normal. Even with his flaws and mistakes, he remains a great hero in my eyes. We should ask ourselves if we are the problem, if we don't know how to appreciate or be content. We must be grateful that, despite his flaws and mistakes, he chose to be the right person for us.
