Description

Places and Forms of power I’m going to deal with the notion of Places and Forms of power. I’ll start by giving definition of each term; « places » could be important building or institutions that represent a certain form of power. It could also be a country or a state. « Power » is the ability to control others, events or resources and to make things happen despite of the resistance, obstacles or opposition. I’d like to illustrate this notion through three documents. The first document is an article from « The New Yorker » written in 2008 by Eric Alterman. The title of this article is « Out of print – The death and life of the American newspaper ». The journalist explains that nowadays, the readership would rather read the news on the web rather than in the newspapers. The article features a news website that publishes information about politics, gossips and many other stories. The editors always check the sources’ accuracy before publishing anything, that’s why only reliable news are posted on the website. Last but not least, the editors can interact with the readership. This article shows the evolution of the media power; now, the public can take part of it. The second document is an article from the British newspaper “The Guardian”, written in 2008 by Charlie Beckett. The title of this article is “Is new media killing journalism?” The text treats about the role of the public in the journalism. They become partners with the journalists in the production of news. Moreover, the article deals with the press freedom and its evolution. The news is more accessible and spreads faster. However, the press freedom is not obvious is all countries; in some authoritarian regimes, the press is closely monitored. The evolution of the new technologies has changed the journalism; now, the public can directly put information on the Internet. They have the same power as the journalists. The third document is a report on VOA News, called “ How do you get your news?” in which some students are being interviewed. Most of them say that that they get their news on the Internet and on social media such as Twitter or Facebook. Some of them read the newspapers like The Time Magazine or The Financial Time. A student explains that nowadays, the Internet is a huge part of the media. The journalist asked them when it was the last time that they read a newspaper. Most of them answered that it has been a while, and others said that they couldn’t even remember. Last but not least, a student says that on the Internet we have a wide range of topics we can choose to read. It’s really important to know what’s going on in the world, that’s why students must read the news more often. To sum up, we can say that the media power can gather people. It’s a real power because everyone can benefit from it. Media is giving us some power and freedom. The public can give their opinions, send information to media organizations, interact with other readers… The public get their news mainly from the web....
