Plato’s Republic- Notes Book 8,9, and 10 Book 8  Four unjust constitutions of the city and man are as follows: o Timocracy o Honor-driven man that resembles and rules government o Oligarchy- rules of the government o Democracy- ruled by public o Tyranny- ruled by man- worst type of government  Five city faults are: o Ruled by people o City of rich and poor o Cannot fight o No principle of specialization o Rulers- peripheral money making occupations  This book dives in depth of each of the pairs and how they rank lower as they go down the list with tyranny being the worst and timocracy being the best.  Socrates says in the end “A tyrant is a parricide as you describe him, then, and a harsh nurse of old age; and we do now seem to have an acknowledged tyranny.” (page 269) Book 9  Socrates in the beginning talks about the tyrannical man and says, “The tyrannical man himself remains to be investigated: how he evolves from a democratic one, what he is like once he has come to exist, and whether the way he lives is wretched or blessedly happy” (page 270)  Then they start talking about the evils of the town and say they “steal, break into houses, snatch purses, steal clothes, rob temples, and kidnap people. Sometimes, if they are capable speakers, they become sycophants and bear false witness and accept bribes.  Glaucon says that a tyrannical soul must be poor and insatiable.  The men only like the materialistic objects and wastes their money on useless things  After he runs out of his money he begins to borrow till the point everyone knows he has no money to give back so they do not lend him more money  This kind of man is known as a tyrannical man who lives a tyrannical life  Socrates proves that we all need justice and that it’s important  So the tyrant is most unhappy and just man is most happy Book 10  In book 10 he talks about how he tells us how he defined and proved to us that we need justice  He then also talks about poetry and how it relates to people  He says that poetry is a corruption to people  It makes us imagine things and make pictures of many materialistic object which are not always real  Images show the good part of the soul  He then talks about the immortality of the soul o Justice is everything that is good for the soul

 

We can see that the conclusion of this book is that Socrates believe in justice The theme of Book 10 is to conclude and wrap of all of the books previous to this one mainly, wrap up on the talk on justice...
