Description

Maya Simkin Policy Paper Outline February 12, 2015 The problem I hope to mitigate is the negative American sentiment in Pakistan. In the status quo, the United States uses drone strikes to try to fight terrorism in the region. While at a glance, it seems like killing terrorists will diminish the amount of terrorists, this comes with unintended consequences. There is a high amount of recruitment for terrorist groups once a civilian’s home gets hit by a drone strike. This is because people want to avenge their innocent family members that were killed by the US. Moreover, the drone strikes destroy important infrastructure that makes it hard for the Pakistani economy to develop. The salary for a terrorist is pretty high compared to most jobs so it becomes a more viable option when the US contributes to lack of stability. There are a plethora of other reasons for why the drone strike policy has done more harm than good. This topic falls under the category of Foreign Policy and Homeland Security as it pertains to a policy that shoots stuff in Pakistan. Possible alternatives include stopping the strikes all together. Another alternative would be to limit them significantly and make them super targeted so that civilian casualties are non existent. Moreover we could just scratch the program and instead go and rebuild all the stuff we have destroyed. The next action I will take is try to collect research on how many civilians we’ve killed and how many terrorists have sprung up because of it. I will also try to find out if killing terrorists actually dismantles terrorist organizations. Additionally I will look for the root causes of terrorism because that seems like the only way to actually address the issue....
