1. The populists first appeared in William Jennings Bryans Campaign. 2. The groups that made up the populist movement included farmers from the southern and western parts of the U.S. It included old grangers, alliancemen, and greenback party members who also wanted government ownership of railroads, telegraph, telephone, etc. 3. They gained their greatest support from the west and south. 4. Answer a. Direct popular election of U.S senators b. The use of initiatives and referendums, procedures that allowed citizens to vote directly on proposed laws c. Unlimited coinage of silver to increase the money supply d. A graduated income tax e. Public ownership of railroads by U.S government f. Telegraph and telephone systems owned and operated by the government g. Loans and federal warehouses for farmers to enable them to stabilize prices for their crops h. An eight hour pay for industrial workers i. A tariff for revenue only j. Immigration restrcitions 8. It was a strength for the populist party because it showed how to improve the economy and to make things easier for regular people who participated in the economy but were limited due to the gold standard. It was a weakness because it divided the populist party. Cleveland who was a democratic party nominee kept sticking to the gold standard and the adoption of populist politics divided the party. Eventually, the populist supporters overtook the democratic party which meant that the populist party lost its position in the system in the long run. The democrats adopted their policies and started using them as their own to oppose the republicans, and now the populists lost votes because their voters switched to support the democratic party.

9. They had planks in support of woman's suffrage, against lynchings, for homesteading, for tough immigration, and helping veterans. The 1896 Republican platform included equal pay for women, favored the gold standard, and territorial expansion.

These groups came together out of the interest of farmers both in the west and south whose product had low prices and needed to have a strong political presence that could bring reforms to benefit them. they believed that the parties other parties which would be the republicans and the democratic did not have a

voice of their own because certain vested interest by the rich and bank owners were being served. They all had complaints against the system that neither political party addressed. b. It shows that they are made up of patches of a bunch of parties. Also, it shows that they are full of hot air and not as organized as they seem to be....
