Description

1. Based on your reading of hesiod’s theogony and the following pages a. What similarities do you find between the creation myths of hesiod and genesis i. Between the creation myths of Hesiod and Genesis, they share commonalities such as having a chronological timeline and essentially relaying the story of the beginning of everything. Similar to Hesiod, the Genesis goes on to describe the first God creating the heavens and the earth and bringing about various other concepts such as light, water, life, animals, and mankind. b. What similarities do you find between the Babylonian creation myth (Enuma Elish) and Genesis i. The similarities between the Babylonian creation myth (Enuma Elish) and Genesis are many, beginning from there being something/someone already there, and this God creating all the creations. Furthermore, all these acts of creation are similar in occurence beginning with water, then dry earth, then humanity, and so on, without there being much thought into each and every thing. 2. Read the following excerpt from James George Frazer to answer these questions a. According to Frazer, how do we know the creation story in Genesis comes from two different sources i. According to Frazer we know the creation story in Genesis comes from two different sources because the beginning chapters of it vastly contradict one another simply being that in the first chapter, man was created last after all the creatures, and then in the second chapter man is created first and then all of man’s needs are met through god creating everything else after. 3. Read the summaries of the chinese, korean, and indian (Hindu) myths to answer these questions: a. Do the far eastern creation myths emphasize different aspects of human existence? i. Yes, the far eastern creation myths definitely emphasize more of what humans have done since their existence. Some exaggerate caste systems such as the Hindus, the chinese also rank humans and their place in society, and the korean’s already have humans but continue to tell the tale of how the first woman came to be from the first man. Rather than emphasizing their being one god, there are multiple in two of them and often the origin tales come from huge events such as marriage. b. 2000 years from now, do you think genesis and the “big bang theory” will seem as fanciful as most of these creation myths? i. I believe that 2000 years from now, there is a huge chance that these theories will not appeal to people more than a joke. Entirely because of the technological advancements we’re making and by then we will have a better idea as to how we came into existence as we already have scientific data to back up how we function and even more chemical science behind why our bodies are the way they are. Humans are always looking for explanations that aren’t mythological in context, so the odds that a creation myth would stay relevant has a low probability....
