Description

CLCV PRE QUIZ 1 1) Describe in a few sentences the castration of Uranus and the birth of Aphrodite a) Uranus is castrated by Kronos at Gaia’s command as Kronos had thrown the cyclops, a few of Gaia’s children into the earth again. Kronos takes a sickle created by Gaia and while Gaia and Uranus are making love, Kronos swoops in and castrates Uranus and throws those remains into the sea from which a white foam forms and Aphrodite emerges. 2) In a few sentences explain how Hesiod describes the birth of Athena a) Athena comes from Zeus and his first wife Metis. However, when time came for Athena to be born, Zeus sneakily swallowed Metis as he was afraid the child would come out “stronger than his lightning bolt” according to the text and he had previously been warned by Uranus and Gaia that this child would be very wise and might bring sway away from Zeus. Then from the forehead of Zeus sprung Athena as time had come for her birth. 3) In a brief paragraph, explain why you think Hesiod has Aphrodite born from the genitals of Uranus and Athena born from the head of zeus a) I believe that Hesiod had Aphrodite born from the genitals of Uranus as she is the goddess of love, desire, beauty and coming from Uranus’s genitals who was also in the process of making love to Gaia, I think he found it made sense that Aphrodite’s being came from the representation of love/sex, which in this case were Kronos’s genitals. Athena, the goddess of wisdom and war, I think Hesiod felt only right that she came from the forehead of Zeus as wisdom/intelligence comes from the brain and I agree with Hesiod that she rightfully originated from there....
