CTE courses help secondary education students explore career fields such as Marketing, criminal justice, construction, automotive technology, welding, machining and culinary all while earning secondary education credits and even possibly college credits.

Research suggests Career and Technical Education is valuable in secondary education because it helps students explore and select a field of interest, retains higher graduation rates, and provides students with hands on learning experience to gain skills they can use to obtain jobs post-graduation. 1: Helps students explore and select a career field of interest. 2: Enrollment in CTE courses aids in retaining higher graduation rates 3: Provides students with hands on learning experience to obtain skills they can apply to jobs after graduation. Penn Foster, a DEAC accredited magazine wrote an article highlighting the benefits CTE courses have for secondary students. (Penn Foster, 2017) While allowing students to explore different career fields, CTE courses give students a glimpse at different fields that may not take a traditional four-year college degree. Vocational and technical training can serve as a gateway to higher paying jobs, especially with companies actively looking for employees. (Penn Foster, 2017) CTE courses create a network of potential employers for students.

The practice of CTE is broad, offering many different types of programs and serving students with a wide range of goals. (Cornelius, 2019) CTE courses are designed to prepare middle and high school students with skills for entry into high demand technical and trade careers post high school. Organizations such as Skills USA allow students to compete in competitions in their field of interest while earning prizes and scholarships.

   

At risk students are likely to stay enrolled in school when they are able to take CTE courses. CTE courses allow these students to experience success in school by allowing them to excel in fields and subjects that interest them. When students have a clear, tangible outcome for their learning and are able to recognize their own successes, engagement comes naturally. (Corneilus,2019) Vocational High schools have a higher graduation rate than traditional education high schools as seen in the visual aid below.

CONCLUSION Requirements

Outline Research suggests Career and Technical Education is valuable in secondary education because it helps students explore and select a field of interest, retains higher graduation rates, and provides students with hands on learning experience to gain skills they can use to obtain jobs postgraduation. CTE courses provide students with hands on learning experiences to enquire skills they can use to land jobs in their field of interest after high school graduation.
