Special Education and Learning Disabilities Social Science and humanities Gracie Gibson IDS 100 August 17, 2021

Introduction ◦ The topic I have chosen to tackle and challenge through the social science and humanities lenses is Special Education and Learning Disabilities. ◦

The reason I chose this particular topic is for a mirid of reasons. The first being as a psychology major the development and psychology behind it has always fascinated me. The second reason is because I have a family member and a family friend who both work in the field working with the youth of those with learning disabilities and special education so it has always fascinated me the kind of heart and talent one must have in order to pursue this as a career path.

Special Education and Learning Disabilities through the Social Science Lens

◦ Learning disabilities can range from mild to severe ◦ Special education helps those with learning disabilities prepare for the future ◦ Teachers have programs for all types of students ◦ Transdisciplinary approach: therapist coming in and leading groups, teaching with all five senses, tactile learning(hands on), and active learning( problem solving, discussions) ◦ The social science lens focuses on how learning disabilities can be touch but not impossible. There are many programs and schools to help people and kiddos who have learning disabilities. One of the best schools in the nation is in Tulsa: The Little Light House.

Special Education and Learning Disabilities through the Humanities Lens ◦ Art and sensory therapy are exceptionally popular strategies in the humanities lens ◦ Music as well as it connects each of us differently ◦ Through music, art, and sensory students are able to connect, calm down, focus, and cope effectively in their classrooms ◦ Sensory rooms, physical therapy gyms, hands on art and music classes ◦ This lens focuses on how students can comfortably express themselves and learn successfully. It also shows how positive and productive results are when utilized effectively and efficiently.

Convergence Explain how lenses relate to your topic in similar ways ◦ Describes learning and success ◦ Teachers are at the forefront ◦ Interactions and learning co-exist

Divergence Explain how lenses relate to your topic in different ways ◦ Reading and explaining ◦ Knowledge through art ◦ Programs and learning strategies depend on the person

Both Lenses ◦ Social sciences focuses on the psychological and socialization aspect of my topic where as the humanities lens focuses on the arts and hands on learning aspect of my topic. Both of these lenses contribute different things through learning and teaching and it’s incredibly important to contribute both of these while teaching and engaging with those who have learning disabilities and those who teach special education.

Further Exploration ◦ Learning about developmental psychology, teratogens, and learning disabilities ◦ How does developmental psychology and learning disabilities work together? ◦ Developmental psychology, learning disabilities ◦ What teratogens contribute to learning disabilities? ◦ Teratogens, learning disabilities

Conclusion ◦ In conclusion I learned a number of things including different teaching methods, how my family member teaches, how important it is to have the heart and skill set to teach those with learning disabilities, and how to be kind and patient moving forward. ◦ It opens your eyes to see how everyone learns and understands things differently.
