Description

I choose this topic as I have a son with a learning disability (Asperger’s) I would like to know how schools manage a person with a learning disability, and if they can be successful continuing onto college. Learning disabilities are not solely the result of genetics or hereditary. Some economic factors can contribute to developing a learning disability. A strong parental role and involvement is crucial to successful learning and development. Training and development of teachers is important. Strategies are always improved upon that work successfully in dealing with special education. Learning disabilities were not fully understood early on. They were treated more medically focusing more on sensory impairment and treatment. Before specific laws were implemented people with learning disabilities were deprived the additional services and assistance in schools. Systematic structure and processes for students and measurement of the student’s progress have been proven successful. (Examples Individual Education Plans “IEP’s) The history lens explains when special education became more prevalent in the school systems. Laws and scholarly articles explain the way teaching has evolved. Convergence – Social science and history lens explain how people dealt with special ed and learning disabilities in the past and present. Both explain how people contributed on successful strategies in education.

Looking through both lenses showed parental and teacher involvement in systemic processes was successful. Continuous education and development in this topic will keep evolving in time from ongoing research and development of programs. Divergence- Social science shows social contributions to special education and learning disabilities. History shows how learning disabilities they have been perceived and improved upon in the education system. History article shows how special ed and learning disabilities were treated in the past and where they are presently. Shows measurable strategies that have been proven successful in continuing ed with learning disabilities. Both lenses show that special ed and learning disabilities is an issue as a student and adult. There are many different learning disabilities. A person who knows their strengths and weaknesses can better understand and manage their learning disability. For further exploration, can someone grow out of a learning disability? Can they have a regular job with few accommodations? And can they continue to college and be successful without the programs they had in primary school (Individual Education Plans)

To conclude, I have learned that developing a learning disability is not just genetics or hereditary. Some learning disabilities develop later in life maybe from social or economic status/stress. Early intervention and planning have been proven successful in the education process. And again, teaching a student hoe to identify their weaknesses and manage their disability helps them in the learning process....
