Pride and Prejudice Pride and prejudice is a novel written by Jane Austen and is set in England in the 19 th century. It tells the story of the Bennet family which is composed by 5 daughters, all unmarried. As at the death of their father they won’t inherit their estate, their mother’s only aim in her life is to find a them a wealthy husband. For this reason when the news of the arrival of a wealthy young man, named Charles Bingley, at Netherfield Park arrives, Mrs Bennet tries to make Mr Bingley falling in love with one of her daughters. Not long after, the Bennets attend a ball in which there is also Bingley with his party. Jane, the older sister, dances most of the time with Bingley and they start to be attracted by each other. At the same ball Mr Darcy, Bingley’s wealthy best friend, insults Elizabeth, who considers him to be “the proudest and most disagreeable man in the world”, instead she feels attracted by Mr Wickham, a soldier of the regiment that has arrived at Meryton. One morning a letter arrives, it is from Mr Collins, the cousins of Mr Bennet who will inherit his estate when he dies. For this reasons he intends to marry one of the young ladies. At first he is fascinated by Jane but then he has to change his interest towards Elizabeth. One day after a strange encounter with Bingley and Darcy, Wickham tells Elizabeth lies about Darcy’s past, so her negative opinion increase. Then Mr Collins proposes to Elizabeth but she refuses as she believes that love is an essential part in a marriage unlike her best friend Charlotte who will immediately accept Mr Collins’s proposal. One day Bingley suddenly leaves Netherfield and it is unknown when and if he will come back. This news causes Jane to go to London with the Gardiners but during the stay she never meets Bingley. In the meanwhile Elizabeth visits Charlotte at Hunsford and they are quite often invited by Lady Catherine de Bourgh at Rosings. She is both the patroness of Mc Collins and the aunt of Darcy. One day while talking with Fitzwilliam, who has arrived at Rosings with Darcy, she discovers that he is involved in Bingley’s departure. Few days later Darcy proposes to Elizabeth but at the same time insults her and her family so she refuses.The next day Darcy gives Elizabeth a letter in which he explains his role in Bingley-s and Wickham lives. The regiment leaves Meryton and Mr Bennet allows Lydia to go with them in spite of Elizabeth’s advice. Elizabeth leaves as well, she goes on a tour with her uncles, the Gardiners. They visit Derbyshire and Pemberley, Mr Darcy’s estate. They meet and he invites them in his property and Elizabeth discovers that he is polite gentleman and realizes that she made the wrong judgement about him, but when the bad news of Lydia’s elopement with Wickham arrives she has to go back home. In the end Lydia and Wickham are found by Darcy who also payed a large amount of money to Wickham to force him to marry Lydia. When the couple returns to Longburn, Lydia blurts out something about Darcy and Elizabeth immediately writes to Mrs Gardiner for further information, in this way she finds out the truth, discovering his gentle and noble nature. She regrets everything she said o thought about him and fells ashamed. Bingley return to Netherfield and asks jane to marry him. Lady Catherine goes to Longburn having heard the rumor of Elizabeth’s engagement to Darcy, she threatens Elizabeth but in vain because eventually Darcy and Elizabeth get married....
