Description

Our group has chosen to focus our report on the movie Office Space (1999). Many organizational behaviour topics and issues can be identified throughout this film. The narrative takes place at a firm, Initech Inc., whose office needs a shake up when it comes to the way employees are treated. One highlight of the movie to discuss, is how Bill Lumbergh, one of the companies many managers, treats his employees and what values he possesses as a management-level employee. Secondly, our group will analyze what motivation factors drive Peter, the main character, to lash out at his job and ultimately drag coworkers Michael and Samir to help in his schemes. Based on the plot, and what our group has learned so far in this course, we feel Hofstede’s Theory can help us navigate through the culture and environmental structure of Initech Inc. For example, the beginning of the movie shows a scenario with many managers, suggesting a large power distance. The movie also gives many cues to hint towards uncertainty avoidance, individualism, and a masculine culture. Additionally, the trait activation theory, can explain behaviours in the movie. This theory suggests certain personalities arise when a situation calls for it. This could explain the main characters eratic behaviour and also give reason to why his friends were so easily swayed to participate.

We have chosen two academic articles to further our arguments in this report. First, we have chosen the article by Kai Henning Blume (2016), “Value-based management as a tailor-made management practice? A literature review.” This article analyzes if organizations can truly benefit from value-based management for long-term organizational success. Evidence from this article can be used to analyze Bill Lumbergh’s management techniques, the relation it has to his personal values, and how if affected his management overall. Secondly, we have chosen, “Work Motivation and Leadership Styles in relation to Organizational Citizenship Behaviour,” by T. Lavanya and Namrata Alice Mani Kalliath (2015). This study examines how leadership style, work motivation, and organizational citizenship behaviour relate to one – another and work together to build a successful organization. This can be observed in the personnel who we will be analyzing, such as Lumbergh and Peter, to understand why they do not work well with one another and how this can be prevented.
