Description

Part A: Module 1 has introduced me to the significance of the arts in the lives of children through varies mediums and how each provides distinctive impacts on children's growth and development. I've gained more knowledge of the importance of introducing arts to children's lives across the lectures and tutorials of module one, which have introduced different art forms, including visual art, music, and drama. Arts in early childhood can be a shared experience which implements active social and communications with the world around them and the wilder world, that also embodies their learning experiences and their relationships with others. Moreover, arts establishes creativities and exploration in children's live in response to learn the wrold, critical and creative thinking skills can also be exemplified through engaging with arts. Each art forms and mediums influence children's live in disparate yet exceptional impacts, which further highlights the significance of the arts in the lives of children. Part B: As the 'The Peppa project' demonstrated the distinctive ways of how children perceive the visual and symbolic knowledge around them, as they have undergone activities that allows them to explore the diversity of art from and different perspectives and to investigate further it's meaning. Which 'children meaning-making and the arts (2nd ed) further on discussed children's approach to understanding meanings of art that embodies communication, knowledge, values, and thinking. The role of drawing is a tool for 'making thinking visible' (Robertson, 2000), as exemplified in the text children are active participants of the interactive drawing process which ultimately utilise their thinking skills. Drawing is demonstrated as a useful communication tool to express children's ideas and interests, as each child held unique information and interests of their own and they all can transform their ideas through graphic and symbolic languages on paper. Furthermore, the interactive process of drawing allows children to demonstrate their knowledge that they perceived from the surrounding world. The way this visual arts experience might allow the children to 'represent and re-represent their ideas and experience' (pelo, 2016, p.31), which allows children to explore the physical aspect of distinctive mediums in the art that would stimulate new ideas. Children's ideas can be represented through colour, texture, movement and sculptural images as they are the language and characteristics of art. Educator Giovanni Piazza suggests children's encounters with art mediums forms developments and builds on to their skills with texture, density, movement, shade, etc. Children advance their knowledge by observing and experiencing with different mediums of art; thus, they often use it for self-expression or an active social tool. Children tents to move from one medium to another during their art making processes which allow them to understand different perspectives and develop a new understanding of their work and of art. Furthermore in the article 'The diminishing role of art in children's lives' (Hamilton, 2017) the author discussed her own child's experience with art as an essential element of their life. Hamilton expresses that when children were not able to express in written or verbal languages, art act as an excellent medium for children to share their thoughts and to communicate.
