Research Study: Financial Incentive–Based Approaches for Weight Loss: A Randomized Trial 1. Summarize the research study’s purpose. Your response should be about 25 to 50 words. The purpose of this research study is to determine if common decision errors could be used to design effective weigh loss intervention (John, Troxel, Volpp, 2008). 2. Describe the relevance of the publication dates of the citations referenced for the research study. Your response should be about 25 to 50 words. Consider the following:  Are some of those cited sources recent (relevant to date of publication)? The publications cited in this study were published from 1969 to 2008. Most are published in the 90s and 2000s. This suggests that there has been research that informs their topic for some time, but that the authors did review at least some very recent work in designing their study and writing their paper(John, Troxel, Volpp, 2008). 3. Identify the type of claim the research study makes. Explain your response. Your response should be about 25 to 50 words. Consider the following:  Is the claim frequency based, association based, or causal? This research study makes a causal claim. The study mentions limited causal evidence of incentivized workouts aid in keeping weight off long term which implies that the researchers sought such causal evidence. In the Conclusions section, the authors indicate that they found some causal evidence about the benefits of weight loss and incentives (John, Troxel, Volpp, 2008). 4. Describe the research method used in the research study. Your response should be about 25 to 50 words. Consider the following:  Is the research method qualitative, quantitative, or mixed? The research method used in the research study was mixed because the participants had to write down their weight loss or lack thereof. The tables showing the results contain numerical data rather than answers to open-ended questions (John, Troxel, Volpp, 2008).

5. Describe the research study’s data collection method. Your response should be about 50 to 100 words. Consider the following:  Possibilities for data collection include surveys, observations, interviews, archive review, objective or biological measures, or some combination of those listed. The researcher's study collection included 6. Describe the research study’s sample. Your response should be about 50 words. Include the following in your response:  Sample size  Sample characteristics The study sample size included 57 people. Approximately 41 percent were black, 53 percent white, 2 percent hispanic, and 4 percent American native or alaskan native. 7. Describe one type of statistical analysis conducted in the research study. Your response should be about 25 words. The research study used SPSS v15.0 (SPSS Inc, Chicago, Illinois) to analyze the data (John, Troxel, Volpp, 2008). 8. Describe one limitation from the research study. Your response should be about 25 to 50 words. One limitation the researcher describes is that the experiment was not conducted for an extensive amount of time to show results lasted longer than the initial 16 weeks (John, Troxel, Volpp, 2008). 9. Describe how this research study could be used in personal and professional practice. Your response should be about 25 to 50 words. Consider the following:  How can the findings from this study be used by people in their work, in their personal lives, or to help others? This research could be used in professional practice by an employee or employer to inform what would be the most effective ways to lose weight (John, Troxel, Volpp, 2008).
