Assignment Worksheet: The phrase "As the twig is bent, so grows the tree" originated in the 18th century by poet Alexander Pope in 1734. This phrase was a part of a series of four poems or moral essays known as the "Epistles to Several Persons." (“Twig is bent, so is the tree inclined, as the | Encyclopedia.com,” 2020) These poems addressed ethical issues surrounding men, women, and riches. This Proverb is thought to be centered on the idea that early influences have a permanent effect on a person's life. The experiences they go through and lessons they learn can and will shape who they are, how they act, and who they will grow up to be later in life. This folk theory applies to lifespan development because, as was discussed in this week's reading, children learn through the things they are exposed to and the influences in their environment. Through life experiences, children become familiar with the world around them, learn problem-solving skills, and develop into adults. A twig is a young plant, and if it is bent, it will grow in the direction in which it has been bent in the same way a child's path in life is shaped and molded by what is instilled in them. Children can be exposed to negative or positive influences that can affect their development and station in life for the good or bad. Hopefully, children who have proper nurturing and are exposed to good influences will grow up to be successful, well-rounded adults who make responsible life decisions.
