DEVELOPMENTAL THEORY COMPARISONS 2 Comparing Piaget and Vygotsky’s Developmental Theories The development of the child’s mind from birth to adulthood has been a contentious topic among psychologists for the past century. The first half of the 20th century saw major strides in the field of developmental psychology. Pioneers in the field of Psychoanalytical development, such as Sigmund Freud and Erik Erikson theorized that development was unconscious and driven by emotions (Santrock, 2014). Alternatively, during this same time period, psychologists Lev Vygotsky and Jean Piaget emphasized child’s development being driven by cognitive thoughts, termed cognitive development theories. This paper will examine Piaget’s Cognitive Developmental Theory and Vygotsky’s Sociocultural Theory, followed by a comparison of these two dominant developmental theories.
