Description

Developmental Psychology PSYCH-UA 34 Fall 2020 Professor: Sarah Myruski, Ph.D. Email: [email protected] Location: Online Class Time: TU/TH 9:30 AM to 10:45 AM

Teaching Assistants: Jessica Hawkins ([email protected]) Abby Wolf ([email protected]) Vivian Liu ([email protected])

Office Hours: Zoom  https://nyu.zoom.us/j/7925259505 Friday 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM *Meetings also available by appointment – email to schedule* Required text: How Children Develop By Robert Siegler and colleagues 5th edition or 6th edition Course Description: We will study biological, physiological, and social factors and their interactions across child development. The goal of this course is to familiarize you with major topics in early human development, provide exposure to empirical literature, and facilitate an understanding and appreciation of the complexity of development. Please NOTE: All lectures, grades, assignments, and announcements will be posted to NYU Classes Make sure that you have access and check regularly so you do not miss any important information! Course Objectives for Students: -- Gain understanding of child development from conception to adolescence. -- Understand topics such as children’s cognitive, social, emotional, and physical development. -- Acquire knowledge of developmental theory and research and its current application in the field. -- Become familiar with major topics in child development and recent empirical literature. Online Format: The online course format is likely new to most of you and is new to me! My goal is to offer real-time interactions while accommodating the variety of student circumstances. To this end, we will offer a mixture of synchronous and asynchronous class sessions.  PowerPoint slides will be posted on NYU Classes at or before each class session. Once posted, all materials will remain available all semester.  Synchronous class meetings: As noted on the course calendar, some class meetings will be held synchronously via Zoom. You can access these meetings through NYU Classes: Select Course  Select Zoom on left side menu  find class meeting and click Join. See Zoom Recording section below for expectations related to your use of video and voice functions. You are not required to share video during these classes, but please make sure your display name is your full name for attendance purposes, and so I can get to know you by name. Synchronous class meetings will consist of lectures, activities, and class discussions. I will record these sessions and videos will automatically be posted to NYU Classes after class. You can access these by selecting the Cloud Recordings tab on the NYU Classes Zoom page, where you will see 3 files for each synchronous lecture: video, audio only, and chat log. I will also post the video files to the Resources page.

Asynchronous class meetings: As noted on the course calendar, some class meetings will be asynchronous. This means I will pre-record a lecture and post it to NYU Classes under Resources. The lecture and all associated materials (e.g. assignments) will be available at the start of that class and remain available all semester. You have flexibility regarding when you watch these asynchronous lectures, but keep in mind that there will often be assignments associated with that lecture due before the next class session.

Recitations: Attendance at recitations is strongly recommended, but not mandatory. All recitation sessions will be synchronous, but they will also be recorded and posted to NYU Classes. These meetings are an opportunity for you to get clarification on something covered in lecture, review course material before an exam, give you feedback on an exam, and review answers for assignments. Course Requirements/Grading: Attendance: I will take attendance during synchronous class sessions, but I do not give grades based on attendance. However, if you do not consistently attend/watch class sessions, you will miss important information in lectures that is not in the textbook. Anything discussed in lectures may be on the exams. Assignments: Throughout the semester, you will complete assignments (approximately 1 per week) intended to highlight key concepts pertaining to the material covered in lecture, which will together constitute 10% of your final grade. You will submit assignments to NYU Classes where they will be graded, and answers will be reviewed at recitations. NYU Grade Scale Percentage Letter Grade 93-100 A 90-92.9 A87-89.9 B+ 83-86.9 B 80-82.9 B77-79.9 C+ 73-76.9 C 70-72.9 C67-69.9 D+ Research Participation: *There is NO research requirement for this 60-66.9 D course.* However, in the spirit of supporting science, you can earn 0-59.9 F extra credit (equivalent to the value of one homework assignment) by participating in one hour of research. You can also earn this extra credit by writing a short paper about a journal article of your choice (not covered in class) as an alternative to research participation. You can sign in to the research participation system at https://nyu-psych.sona-systems.com/ to get more information about available research study opportunities. The final will be approximately 20% cumulative (Chapters 1-10) and 80% from new material (Chapter 11-15). Exams will count for 90% of your grade (30% each). Due to the number of students in the class, exam questions will be in multiple-choice format to allow grades to be posted in a timely manner. Exams will be completed online. Each exam will be available for 24 hours, beginning at the class session start time. During the 24-hour period, you can decide when to begin. Once you begin, you will have 1 hour 30 minutes to complete the exam.

Zoom Recording Students who participate in this class with their camera on or use a profile image are agreeing to have their video or image recorded solely for the purpose of creating a record for students enrolled in the class to refer to, including those enrolled students who are unable to attend live. If you are unwilling to consent to have your profile or video image recorded, be sure to keep your camera off and do not use a profile image. Likewise, students who un-mute during class and participate orally are agreeing to have their voices recorded. If you are not willing to consent to have your voice recorded during class, you will need to keep your mute button activated and communicate exclusively using the “chat” feature, which allows students to type questions and comments live.
