ADM-530 – Public and Nonprofit Administration 

Identify five real-life services performed by the public sector: A public service is a service which is provided by government to people living within its jurisdiction, either directly (through the public sector) or by financing private provision of services (ScienceDaily, 2017). Some services that the public sector provides, having children receiving free education in public schools. Another service is getting the mail delivered to anywhere in the United States with the postal services. Another service is the law enforcement for the city with the police department. Having the fire department for the city is another service performed by the public sector. The government providing solid waste and recycle for the citizens is another public service.

Identify five real-life services performed by the nonprofit sector:

“Nonprofit organizations make up the nonprofit sector which is also often referred to as the philanthropic sector, the third sector, the independent or the voluntary sector” (Tury, 2016). The sector fulfills crucial functions for modern societies (Tury, 2016). One of the biggest services that is performed by the nonprofit sector is feeding and helping the homeless in home and food shelters. One service that planned parent does it provide health care to low income families. Religious nonprofits like Younglife provide Christian camps to people to have a place to escape to learn about religion. The YMCA provides healthy living services and child development for families in the area. The WWF helps research and protect animals on the endangered list. Identify three real-life services performed by both the public and nonprofit sector: “The delivery of human services in contemporary American society involves complex relationships between public and nonprofit organizations. These relationships, often referred to as public-nonprofit partnerships, have market-like characteristics where government agencies purchase services from private vendors to meet the welfare needs of the community” (Schwartz & Austin, 2016). One relationship is FEMA and redcross coming together to help with disaster relief. Another relationship is Providing teachers in Teach for America program for government funded schools. Medical research of animals by government universities and the cultural and species preservation work of nonprofit zoos is another relationship between the public and nonprofit sector.

In 250-500 words, explain how each, the public and nonprofit sector, serve the public good. Does it matter if each serves a different purpose? Should they both provide the same services? The nonprofit sector serves the public good because they work with their community and work directly with members of the community who are in need. Nonprofits provide services that other sectors fail to provide them and meet the needs of the community other sectors cannot meet (Tury, 2016). They also build community and express and preserving vales, traditions and other aspects of cultures (Tury, 2016). The public sector serves the public good by providing services by the government because a market failure occurred, and the market didn’t provide these services (ScienceDaily, 2017). Services like police, national defense and public education are some important services that should not be under the private sector. All members of society should theoretically benefit from the provision of public goods,

Ashley Schiele but the reality is that some need them more than others. It does matter if each of these sectors serve a different purpose because these sectors have different missions and need to reach and help every citizen in the community so everyone has services they need. If the public sector serves the same purpose of the public sector, then people like the homeless would not receive all the goods and services that are needed for them to survive. Also, with these sectors having different missions that provides less stress on taxes for the government needing to provide all of these services and there would be no need for the nonprofit sector if they provided the same services as the public sector. These two sectors should not provide the same services so every citizen in the community is provided the services they need.
