Santiago Burgos 1 Jossmarie Santiago Burgos Prof. Rivera INGL 3202 Sec. 010 February 19, 2021 Puerto Rican Obituary, a painful reality Puerto Rican Obituary is an epic poem telling the story of Nuyorican experience through five characters for whom the American Dream is a dream deferred. Among the main themes Pietri writes about in the poem are: racial injustice, labor, and death. The American poetry that Pedro Pietri is presenting us with: Nuyorican, or as the dictionary puts it: Neorican. It is defined as: "...a Puerto Rican living in New York or one who has lived in New York and returned to Puerto Rico." The mainstream American culture views Puerto Ricans not as American citizens, but as another Latino group, and due to this are not as understanding or accepting of Puerto Ricans into this country. However, the 116 lines are about Puerto Ricans living in Spanish Harlem, trying to make their American dreams come true, but there is so much sadness because many of the characters in the poem can't reach their own dreams. Sadly, they die hating their lives, and the other people around them. The line “All died/ waiting dreaming and hating” (line 46) shows the readers of the poem that even though Puerto Ricans come to America in search of a better life, sometimes the dreams fall flat, and the anger and bitterness are what are left for the relatives and children. Pietri's whole poem is the reflection on this fact. We have endorsed America as the best country in the world but we refuse to help others experience this claim. It was so much work for Puerto Ricans to even achieve a sliver of this happiness and they kept getting shut down, no matter how hard they tried. Of course they were going to hate each other. They gave up their own heritage and traditions to try and fit in with Americans when they never really were going to

Santiago Burgos 2 have the chance, so they died alone, nothing to show for all of their laboring. Pietri wanted these people to be themselves, find their roots again and not change. His mood is dark and his anger is towards both America and these people listed because they forgot themselves in all of the stress and strain. Notably, Pietri's poetry is political poetry in its most direct sense: a poetry of denunciation, directed to create a cultural consciousness among the members of the Puerto Rican community. Other themes are the demystification of authority figures and social institutions (government, schools, church, "the system"); alienation in contemporary urban life; a surrealistic search for the truth in the irrational and the absurd. In addition, the political status and the poverty levels for Puerto Ricans in New York can be discussed in light of Pietri's denunciation of "the system." "Puerto Rican Obituary" can be read as a parody of an epic poem (the dream and the search and the epic deeds of a nation inverted), and within an antiesthetic attitude. Again, as in Laviera, this is oral poetry to be recited and screamed. In Traffic Violations, Pietri's poetry falls within the surrealistic mode, fragmented images, search for the absurd in everyday life, irrational, surprising metaphors and imagery, humor, and sarcasm. The poem does not clearly identify the speaker, but does refer to itself as an obituary. The poem was written to sound as if being dramatically delivered. Pedro Pietri writes in a unique tone with a variety of emotion. He expresses anger towards white, religious, oppressive Americans, he expresses sorrow over the conditions faced by minorities and he expresses longing for a society in which Puerto Ricans could live in peace....
