REVIEW MODULE CHAPTER ___________

Description of Procedure A non-invasive test that shows how well the lungs are working. You will ask the client to empty their lungs by gently breathing out as much air as possible. Then have them take a quick, but deep, breath in. Hold it for 10 seconds, and then breathe out. The test will be done several times and will take about 30 minutes to complete.

Indications Evaluation or respiratory complaints, such as a cough and dyspnea, assessment and monitoring of disease severity and progression, monitoring for drug toxicity and efficacy, pre-operative assessment, evaluation of the effects of occupational or hazardous exposures.

Interpretation of Findings The lower the levels the worse off the clients lung capacity is. This can also indicate certain lung disorders and further testing may be required.

Potential Complications Dizziness during the test, feeling SOB, coughing, or a possible asthma attack brought on by deep inhalation.
