“The Blanket” by Floyd Dell...

Description

Reading Journal # 2 (1) “The Blanket” by Floyd Dell, the characters in this story are Petey, Granddad, and Dad’s fiancé. Dad decides to move Granddad to nursing home and buys him a high priced and beautiful blanket. Granddad is sad about leaving the home, but he pretends that he is happy about the blanket and going to nursing home. Meanwhile, Petey cries because he loves his Granddad and doesn’t want him to leave. When Dad’s fiancé arrive home, she becomes angry because Dad bought very expensive blanket for Granddad. Petey runs away to brings in scissor and tells Dad to cut the blanket into two, so Petey could send Dad away to nursing home with other half blanket when he gets old. Dad, Granddad and Petey all cry together. Dad with tears on his eye after realizing he was wrong for planning on sending Granddad to nursing home. (2) I liked the part when Petey cried because he didn’t want this Granddad to leave because he loved him. Everyone wants to stay with people they love. I was also sad when my grandparents were leaving me because I love them and I enjoy being together with them. (3) A part I did not like was when Petey’s Dad attempted to send Granddad to nursing home. Dad did not ask Granddad if he wanted to go nursing home and didn’t focus on what Granddad wanted which is to stay with his family. I think it’s important to let person do whatever they want. (4) Is it okay to send old people away to nursing home without their will? Shouldn’t children stay with people they love? (5) Startle: cause a person to feel sudden shock. I startled after I woke up from my dream. Fiddle: A violin. My brother is playing the fiddle.

Shanty: A small built hut or cabin. There are many of Shanties in my Village. (6) I didn’t like the story because it was really sad. At the end of the story Dad, Granddad and Petey were crying. I was glad when Dad cried because he was wrong for planning to send Granddad to nursing home. However, I felt the story to be very depressing. The use of old tune from Granddad reminds of me old music which I dislike. I like the way author ended the story with three of them crying because it makes me feel like they will end up staying together and I hope they do. No matter how big the conflict, there is always a solution for it....
