Description

Protecting the public reflective report 3 500 words This will be a reflective writing report about myself with the aim of reviewing my experiences, reflecting on these and then what I have learnt in protecting the public with the ultimate objective of bringing that content into my real life. This process will also give me the opportunity to recognise areas where I will need to improve. I will use Boud`s triangular representation model to construct this reflective writing report. Split into the three component parts of experience, reflection and learning Bouds model has proven in previous reflective works of mine to be easier to reflect with. Especially considering the word count restrictions. In describing Bouds method for reflection Boud himself suggests that reflection assist in learning and this happens in three different stages “Before learning experience, During learning experience, After learning experience” (Dianne Smallidge 2015). In Figure 1 a representation of model is present.

figure 1 As mentioned above I choose Bouds model as it has been useful to me previously with a restricted word count. The simplicity of the model in regards to reflection is the main reason for this. I have been able to through protecting the public lecturers learn about terrorism, counter terrorism, sex offenders and their management, hate crime and why it happens as well as stalking and harassment. This has covered information and statistics that I found very intriguing and useful. The content around stalking in particular. The numbers e.g. 4.4% reported being stalked was shocking and more so when considered that a Leicester university study found that 57% of victims weren't even going to the police meaning a large amount of the crime was unreported. It was also intriguing for myself to find that the majority of stalkers didn't have a mental illness but rather the opposite going against my previously held notions. Overall this content in particular got me to question myself and think about the topic. Whilst I intend to go into counter terror I still think this enlightening information was still exceedingly useful. During these lectures I have had the opportunity to discuss openly with others different opinions which could be opened up to analysis which I am more confident in doing now having developed a stronger relationship with these individuals. Drawing on their own different experiences has given a unique perspective also e.g. peers with a more detailed history in the police force and who has firsthand experienced their diversity policies has an insider outlook and can detail the actual affects of processes. Reflecting upon these subjects, they managed to give me a vibrant opportunity to enhance my opinions and ideas that I already possessed, especially in areas such as Stalking. I personally found that I had experiences that I could relate to and thus not much could initially be gleamed. However being able to converse with others in the way that I did and openly engage and challenge others including the lecturer did give the chance to think in new ways towards these experiences. Such as When I myself was essentially accused of being a terrorist.. The material was not overtly heavy on

theory but the theories that were present went over material I had previous been involved with. Although going other it again with others has given me the chance to develop myself professionally. The new content that I found was detailed and passionate enough to inspire myself and spur me on to converse with others who would openly engage me feeding off my own enthusiasm. What I learnt outside of the material provided was that: • That when I am interested in something that energy brings out interest and engagement with others • That this same energy would carry out and over into social situations where you could more informally discuss content which would in turn bring out experiences and information that would otherwise not be garnered • That having a lecturer who is consistent and full of passion for his/her subject made a marked impact upon myself • That some of the skills being taught were never going to be relevant to myself whilst others could be multi purpose in almost every regard. With an aim to reflect upon all these in mind, I believe that in the future I should attempt to bring more energy and enthusiasm to others. I should also try to expand the people and groups that I correspond with so I have a wider range of experiences that I can draw upon, If I could develop an energy filled environment in addition to promoting one with conversation in min I should see positive benefits in terms of my own knowledge pool.
