As a health science student, it is important that I am aware of my strengths and competencies and how I can use them in practice. It is extremely important that I have been educated on delivering patient-centred care as a member of an interdisciplinary team. Throughout my journey of becoming a clinician I need to ensure that I am emphasizing on evidence-based practices, quality improvement approaches and informatics. One of the main competencies I have acquired while undertaking a postgraduate degree in Orthoptics is the application and demonstration of appropriate knowledge, skills, and behaviour in a clinical setting. As a clinician, it is important to acquire this skill of human capital (HC) as it increases the employee’s efficiency (Prasban & Nojedeh.2016). According to an economic study conducted in Dubai, the results reveal that human skill is a common index that is required at all levels of management within an organization (Prasban & Nojedeh.2016). Throughout the clinical placements, I have encountered with a diverse range of patients with ocular issues and this experience has developed my HC aspects. One major HC that I can confidently mention it as my strength is communication with patients. As a clinician, I now understand that we would be interacting with patients from a diversified background and my communication skills would have to be modified according to the patient needs. An example where I had to modify my communication skills was when I had to perform a patient history assessment on a 50-year-old male who was of non-English speaking background. My approach to this patient had to be modified by using layman terms and open-ended questions that only require a response of “YES” or “NO”. However, I still need to acquire the skills to avoid the use of medical jargon with patients. Formal education and training are essential in improving the capacities of production (Hendricks.2002). Therefore, via training in patient interaction I can improve on this weakness in future clinical placements. Therefore, HC allows health-care professionals to be innovative, knowledgeable, and creative which increases patient satisfaction (Schultz.1961).

It is through the aspects of social capital (SC), that allows clinicians to gain better access to opportunities and understandings of the job market (Stromgren et el. 2016). Through these social relations, it also allows clinicians to develop employability skills such as altruism, honesty, integrity, empathy, legal obligations, Enter your Student name and Number here

I have developed these skills throughout university while attending networking and volunteering events. Most importantly, SC has allowed me to develop team building skills, and respecting everyone’s perspective, during group projects. As a clinician, I believe that these skills would help me in the future for job applications and maintaining professional behaviour with colleagues. Identity capital is one of the most important framework, as it allows individuals to negotiate life passages in an increasingly individualistic and chaotic society (Hinchliffe & Jolly.2011). Reflecting on my university experiences, I have always struggled to identify my main goal and managing time. I believe that clinicians must have a personal aim and efficiently manage time. This is important because as clinicians we must have a goal that we have to set for our patients when devising their treatment and management plans. Therefore, identity capital is one of my weakness and to overcome this weakness, I am identifying goals that I can accomplish and developing skills where I could effectively improve on my timemanagement skills.

Cultural capital is an important aspect as it reduces cultural disparities and allows clinicians to treat patients and colleagues equally with respect. I have grown up in a culturally diverse area and have been always exposed to diversified individuals since school. These attributes contribute to cultural capital. As a clinician, it is important to acquire these skills as it allows us to work together, facilitate cooperation and innovation. As a clinician, it is extremely important that I am aware of different cultures and showing utmost respect to patients. For example, patients from a Jehovah witness background refuse transfused blood and organ transplants. Although, I may have a different perception on these topics, it is important that I respect their cultural and religious view and provide equal care towards them. I believe that my journey of becoming a clinician will be both challenging and exciting. It is an ongoing learning curve full of experiences that will aid me in becoming a professional clinician. Understanding the concept of the graduate capital framework has developed the gaps in my knowledge and has allowed me to self-reflect on my weaknesses and implement ways to overcome them.
