Description

Reinforcement vs Punishment For each example below identify the type of consequence. A consequence is something that follows a behavior. In some examples I have underlined the behavior and italicized the consequence. Consequences may increase or decrease the likelihood that the behavior will happen in the future under the same circumstances. Positive and negative do NOT refer to good and bad. Rather, positive means something is added (think plus sign “+”) and negative means something is taken away or avoided (think subtraction sign “-“). PR (positive reinforcement) – the consequence causes something appetitive to be delivered and encourages the behavior in the future NR (negative reinforcement) – the behavior prevents an aversive stimulus from being delivered (something is avoided, it does not happen), which also encourages the behavior to happen again in the future PP (positive punishment) – the behavior causes something aversive to happen or be delivered which discourages the behavior in the future. NP (negative punishment/omission training) – the behavior causes something appetitive not to happen or be delivered, which discourages the behavior in the future. The Easy Way to Get These Correct! Identify the behavior and its consequence then ask two questions: 1) Is the behavior likely to increase (R) in the future or decrease (P)? 2) Is that because the consequence was something that was added (positive) or taken away (negative) as a consequence? (ONLY focus on the consequence!) ___PR_ Police stop drivers and give them a prize if their seatbelts are buckled; seat belt use increases in town. __NP__ A basketball player who commits a flagrant foul is suspended from playing and loses playing time; his fouls decrease in later games. __PP__ A soccer player rolls her eyes at a teammate who delivered a bad pass; the teammate makes fewer errors after that. __PR__ The annoying child jumps up and down, hand raised, yelling "Me, me, me!" until the teacher calls on her. The child jumps and yells even more in the future. __PR__ After a good workout in physical therapy, hospital patients are given ice cream sundaes. ___PR_ Homeowners who re-cycle get to deduct 5% from their utility bill. __PP__ After completing an Alcohol Education Program, the suspension of your driver's license is lifted. __NP__ After Jodi flirted with someone else at the party, her boyfriend stopped talking to her. _PR___ The employee of the month gets a reserved parking space. __NP__ A dog is banished to his doghouse after soiling the living room carpet. _PR___ A professor allows those students with A averages in the class to skip the final exam __PR__ If Paul takes his dog out for a walk the dog won’t pee on the carpet. __NR__ If Paul does not walk his dog the dog will pee on the carpet....
