Elmaadawy 1 CHM 121 Experiment discussion Title: Relating Mass and Volume Name: Amani Elmaadawy, Section: 23651 Instructor: Louis Pimpinella Date of experiment: Feb 05, 2021 Purpose The purpose of this experiment is to find the density of a substance to identify the name of the substance. Besides, understanding the difference between precision and accuracy.

Fundamental principle or theory behind the experiment Density is a unique proper for each substance that can't be affected by the object's shape or size. Besides, density is the ratio of mass over volume. The formula of density that is going to be used is: Density (D) = Mass (M)/ Volume (V).

Method To reach the experiment's goal, we measured the samples we have then we took the average for them. Then we added them to a graduated cylinder filled with water and calculated the volume of water before and after adding each sample. From there, we were able to calculate the volume of each sample. We used the graph to draw mass over volume and got an approximated slope from our measurements that present the substance's density.

Elmaadawy 2 Discussion We used the scales to calculate the mass and the cylinder with water to measure the samples' volume. By measuring both the mass and the volume of the samples, we could get the average which we used to get the density. Experimenting with these are some errors that may occur. First, while placing the samples in the cylinder, it may cause a broke down in the bottom of the cylinder. Second, while placing the sample, some water can splash out of the cylinder. Both will lead to a loss of water, which will affect the measurement of the samples. Third, bubbles adhering to the submerged sample will affect the measurement of the volume. Finally, the errors that happen because the scales by shifting up and down lead to mistaken masses. These errors will lead to wrong density measurements. I learned that I need to be careful while taking measures to avoid mistakes. I realized that I could get the density using the graph of mass over volume.

Conclusion Finally, we were able to figure out the density of the unknown substance. After calculating the density, the result came with 8.56 g/ml. Searching for the substance in the table by its density, we figured out that Cadmium has a density of 8.642 g/ml; therefore, we assume that it is Cadmium....
