TheRhetoricalPrécis Overview:Inordertoconciselydescribetheargumentandcontextanauthorpresentsinatext, academicwriterssometimesuseaformatcalledtherhetoricalprécis.Thisformisahighlystructured four‐sentenceparagraphthathighlightstheessentialrhetoricalelementsinanytext.Theprécis includesthenameofthespeaker/writer(s),thecontextorsituationinwhichthetextisdelivered,the majorassertion,themodeofdevelopmentorsupportofthemainidea,thestatedand/orapparent purposeofthetext,andtherelationshipbetweenthewriter(s)andtheaudience.Thefollowingisa breakdownoftheinformationtoincludeineachofthefoursentences.
