Elisha Rosensweig Experimental Psych Summary Paper #1 9/14/2020

Why Do We Enjoy Reality-TV Michal Hershman Shitrit and Jonathan Cohen (2016) in their paper: Why Do We Enjoy Reality Shows: Is It Really All AboutHumiliation and Gloating?, they examine what about reality TV interests people. There are two different theories. The first theory is that people relate to the people in reality shows and empathize with them. The second theory is that people enjoy intruding on other private lives and seeing their vulnerable selves. The hypothesis for this study was to survey people about their feelings on reality shows. The survey would examined participants’ willingness for them or family members to participate correlated with if that person enjoys reality shows. If there is a negative correlation, thean it would seem that the enjoyment of reality shows is more about watching the private lives of others and their humility, not something you would want to do yourself or watch a family member participate in. On the other hand, if there is a positive correlation than it would seem that empathy is the main factor for the enjoyment of reality TV. The researchers used 12 different reality programs that aired in Israel with varying plots and themes. Participants were asked, “How often they watched, how much they enjoyed, the extent to which they would want to participate if offered a chance, and

how happy they would be if a family member was interested in participating,” along with questions “ regarding demographics, TV viewing habits, familiarity with the reality television shows mentioned[..], and self-disclosure.” The results showed that on average the participants did not enjoy reality shows, scoring lower than a 3 on a 1-7 scale. There were however some participants for each show that had a high interest in participation. This result showed that although interest in reality shows may be low, interest in participation is much higher., Upon analysis of the results, they found many things. They found that general TV viewing on average had little effect on willingness to participate. A positive correlation was found between self-disclosure and willingness to participate. The most effective factor that they found to predict willingness to participate was the level of enjoyment. These findings indicate that enjoyment of reality TV isn’t connected to humiliation but rather connected to “ a positive assessment of participating in reality shows.” (2.5 points) Accuracy of summary (how well did you capture the gist of the paper): 2 (2.5 points) Clarity and Quality of Writing: 2.5

Total: 4.5/5 Elisha: I think you might have been a bit confusted about the results. I agree that the paper could have been a bit clearer in how they described the results....
