HOSP 230 – Speech Assessment # 8 – Lou Gehrig – Farewell Speech – July 4, 1939 Name: Lexi Wetmore This assessment is in two (2) parts. The video clip is the only known recording of Gehrig’s speech – however (and unfortunately) it only contains a few sentences (as compared to the entire speech) – hence the reason why I added the full transcript to read as well.
1. In one word, how would you describe what (in your opinion) must have been going through Mr. Gehrig’s mind prior to stepping up to the microphone?
He must have been feeling very emotional and thinking about all the aspects of his career and things to be thankful for.
2. In one word, how would describe his speech?
Hopeful.
3. What phrase (in the written text) was most meaningful to you?
I may have had a tough break, but I have an awful lot to live for.
4. Why, in your opinion, has this speech gone down in American history as one of the greatest speeches ever given? I think this is considered one of the greatest speeches ever given because of the message. He is very thankful to everyone he’s ever interacted with in the sport and finds himself lucky. He tells a story in the experiences he’s had with everyone and it’s very heart felt. With such a successful baseball career he could have talked just about himself but instead focused on everyone else that got him there....
