Description

Po’okela Akiona 3/21/2021 Math-150 Professor Carmen Benavides Scientific Notation 1. Overview: ●

scientific notation is where you are expressing numbers that are too big or too small to be written in a decimal form. scientific notation is written into two pieces those two parts are just the numbers alone and the other part is where the decimal point is in the middle of the number where it is greater than 1 and less than 10. For example, if a number is 4,900,000 it would be 4.9*10^6. If the number is smaller like 0.025 it would be 2.5*10^-2. The students will have a worksheet that will have fifth-teen problems of scientific notation where they will be able to write two forms of the notation and determine whether the number is smaller or bigger by the negative or positive exponents that they have. Students can use this in the real world when they're doing science projects where they have a really big number they can break it down into scientific notation. After this worksheet is done the students should be able to understand how to use scientific notation and what it is about.

2. Objectives: ● The children will be able to identify the difference between the two forms of scientific notation and which numbers are smaller and larger. Students will be able to tell this by the negative exponents in the scientific notation or positive, also

they will be able to tell this by the way the decimal points are located and each numbered problem they have. After this activity should be able to use this out in the real world to condense a number that may be too big or too small. 3. Time ●

This should take the whole class period to complete. The reason why this will take the whole class time to complete is that I will teach them about scientific notation and what it means and how they are supposed to complete this activity. after that I will begin showing examples of how numbers can be written in scientific notation, then after this, they will complete the activity sheet that I have provided for them.

4. Materials: ●

The materials that I will need to supply them with is pencil, erasers, and see the paperwork sheets that I have for them.

5. Activity: ●

the activity is a worksheet that will have a variety of different number problems that students will have to change into scientific notation and out of scientific notation. the students will have fifth-teen problems on their worksheets that they will need to complete by the end of class. Here are a few examples of what the worksheet will look like. 63,000= 6.3*10^4 908,000,000=9.08*10^8 5.6*10^5=560,000 8.15*10^8=815,000,000

0.015=1.5*10^-2 0.00000123=1.23*10^-6 3.67*10^-6=0.00000367 1.3*10^-3=0.0013...
