12) Define ethics and morals. The term ethics refers to the study and analysis of what constitutes good or bad conduct. The term morals is used as an adjective to describe a person’s actions in other parts of life.

13) Explain the difference between ethical issues and ethical dilemmas. Ethical issues are broad social questions that include a controversy over what the right thing to do is. These issues can typically be solved by looking in a Code of Ethics book, or something similar. Ethical dilemmas are situations in which one person has to decide what to do. These situations are difficult for individuals to decide either because the right course of action is not clear, or because the correct course of action carries some negative consequences. Dilemmas involve careers and actions, and the choice is typically unclear.

14) Why do criminal justice professionals have a special interest in learning about ethics? Criminal justice professionals have an interest in learning about ethics because they come across is frequently in the field. Some reasons they have this interest include they each have discretion, they each have the duty of enforcing the laws, they accept their duty to protect the constitution specifically due process, and because they are all public servants. CJ professionals enjoy learning about ethics because they can learn about the tools and understand how to resolve ethical issues and what move to make.

15) Discuss and define justice. Justice is the quality of being impartial, fair, and just. It is derived from the Latin Justitia, meaning concerning rules or laws. The use of a judge in a courtroom is used to make sure that the individual who is being punished is receiving the correct punishment that fits the crime they have committed.

Due process is constitutionally mandated procedural steps that are designed to eliminate error in any governmental deprivation of protected liberty, life or property. It is in our rights of due process that we should receive careful investigation of the case against us before any punishment is seen. The 7 elements of Due Process include: 1. Notice of charges 2. This is important to Ethics course because there is no point of learning and practicing ethics if your actions will not reflect what you have learned.
