1.) Describe the setting of the novel. 

The setting of the story is a dystopia, which is a place which is imagined, and is bad or unpleasant. It is set in a Tolitarian government which is a form of government that hypothetically permits not individual freedoms and it seeks to subordinate all aspects of an individual’s life. This includes constant surveillance, poor living standards, and sexual repression. The setting of this novel reflects tyranny. It takes place in London, England, chief city of airstrip one. This is the 3rd most populated province in Oceania. The official language is Newspeak, this language is controlled by the government, it is constantly changing and contradicting.

2.) Describe the protagonist of the novel (physically, emotionally, and mentally). 

Winston Smith is a 39-year-old man who despises and is disgusted by the Party. He is a smallish, frail man, whose body was shown in the blue overalls that he had to wear as a uniform enforced by the Party. He has fair hair, and his face is naturally positive, his skin is rough due to soap, dull blades, and the freezing weather of the winter air that had just ended. He also has a varicose ulcer. He is a very weakly and cowardly individual. He desires for greater things, he wants bigger and better. He has this idea that there are other people out there that have the same ideas as him. He does not have a lot of skills or important, he is just an average person. He has a desire that is bigger than Oceania, and he wants to see that achieved.

3.) Describe the Party and Big Brother. 



The Party consisted of the Outer party and Inner Party. It was made up of any man, woman, or child. They had full authority, and if they said something did not happen, then it did not happen, and you did not want to talk back to them and try to say otherwise. The Party controls the past, present, and future. You never had sex for pleasure, it was only to make new members for the party. Kids were also trained as spies for the party. The Big Brother was one of the founders of the Revolution. He helped bring about the current state of Oceania. He his dark and mysterious, and is considered the black musattioci’d man. He symbolically represents dictators of the past, like Stallion.

4.) Describe Thoughtcrime and the Thought Police.





Thoughtcrime is any form of thought that is alternative to the construct of the Party. Any idea that was not approved or allowed by the Party was considered a Thoughtcrime. Desire was considered a thoughtcrime. It is also a face that looks like you are having a thought that goes against the construct of the Party. The thought police are the Gestapo of Oceania. They are thought to be just like the Nazis from Germany. They can make you disappear for any crime that the dominating Party decides is worth it. People simply disappeared, and you would be taken in the middle of the night, and it would be like you did not exist.

5.) Where does Winston go and what happens to him at the end of Section 1? 

Winston goes walking around the Prole district and finds a prole in a bar, and he tried figuring out the truth but the man was to incoherent. He wonders if anyone actually knows if the past is better than the present. Then he goes to Mr. Charrington where he learns part of a nursery rhyme, and a sees a drawing of a museum downtown. As he is leaving the shop he sees the dark-haired girl from the fiction department, who he thinks is following him, and he is afraid that he is going to get caught....
