1. My chosen artifact is the Palace of Versailles 2. Describe the artifact in detail using any applicable senses mentioned in the overview. The Palace of Versailles is a palace in which the Kings of France resided from 16821789. It is of French Baroque architecture with ornate, and complicated details throughout. It has a lot of curved arch ways and columns with smooth floors in its interior. It looks like it has an airy feel with large, grande spaces, and many garden and courtyards. I imagine it smells very floral right now, but at one time in history it probably smelled like absolute crap due to the poor hygiene of the time. I also imagine the sounds throughout the palace being echoey and carrying a long distance when it is empty, and not opened to the public. 3. What are the elements of the artifact that you believe are most important to how you experience it? Does the choice of medium impact your experience? Some of the elements that I believe are most important are the themes of the multiple salons and halls throughout the palace. I think every room tells a different story and portrays the history of France and the palace itself as the Kings saw fit. I also definitely think the choice of medium impacts the experience because it's much different than something like a singular piece of art, book, or song, and it would be a mulitple day experience where you would be discovering new aspects of the artifact everywhere you look. 4. State your opinion on what you believe is the purpose of this artifact and the success of the creator in achieving the purpose. I think the purpose of this artifact is to display the powerful and elite status of the royal family through its opulance and grandeur. 5. Discuss how the artifact reflects the culture (or context) in which it exists. Be sure to address what aspects of culture have relevance for this artifact: politics, history, religion, social perceptions, technology, media, education, and so on. In other words, how do the artifact and its culture interrelate? The palace reflects its culture in multiple ways. In many areas of the palace there are time period pieces of art to include sculptures, architecture, textiles, and murals that are artifacts in their own right. There are also galleries that display the military and political success throughout each King's reign. It was a place for the people of France to admire and view as a symbol of aristocracy and heritage. In today's culture the palace has been mentioned in many different outlets inlcuding TV, music, films, and video games. The palace contains a chapel which displays murals of religious depictions and is also the tallest building on the palace grounds....
