There are many things that made me decide I wanted to become a social worker. I have always helped people. It’s in my nature. I have always found that people easily tell me their problems and want me to listen. I didn’t always know that I wanted to be a social worker but I’ve always known I wanted to help people. When I was younger I always wanted to be a teacher or a nurse. My family is another big reason I wanted to pursue this career. My mom was diagnosed with OCD after my grandfather died in the 5th grade. She went to the psychiatric ward and received the help she needed. Through my mom’s darkest times with her illness I was always the one who took care of family responsibilities she could no longer do and reassured her that her fears were implausible. After my parents got divorced my younger sister was diagnosed with the same mental illness. I saw how well going to consoling helped both and realized that, that was what I wanted to do. I originally wanted to be a psychiatrist, but I’m not very good at sitting for extended periods of time and don’t want to spend 14 years in college becoming one. I want to help people as fast as I can. I thought that this would be my next best option at making a difference. Attributes I will bring to social work are, I have an open mind. I’m willing to stand up fpr what I believe in without stepping on others’ toes. I’m a fast learner and people more often than not feel comfortable talking to me. The only thing that will bother me as a social worker is not always being able to help the way that I’ll want. I know that there are a lot of rules and regulations you have to follow and I know there will be times where I think I’ll be able to help my clients better but the state won’t allow you to do certain things. I think for you to be the best teacher would be to just keep an open mind and keep the class having an open mind. I think group discussions are great because as a social worker, we’re constantly going to be working in a

group setting of some kind. I think practicing are skills will be great because what better way to learn than doing!...
