Description

CLASS ARRANGEMENTS IN 211 – PROPERTY LAW A.

1.

Lecture & Tutorial delivery

As you are aware your courses in 211 will be delivered both face to face and remotely. I plan to use the K.I.S.S. principle by keeping it simple. The Lecture will be delivered initially in two parts and will follow this process: 1. Welcome, review of previous weeks material, administrative matters and introduction to this weeks material ( in week #1 we will have a bit of a navigation around the iLearn site) 2. Chunk #1 of lecture: I will share my screen and speak to the PowerPoint slides that are now available on iLearn. During the lecture I may share other material and make use of the virtual whiteboard. 3. A break then a review and Q & A session on Chunk #1, introduction to Chunk #2; 4. Chunk #2 as per Item 2 above. 5. A review and Q & A session on Chunk #2. Depending on content PowerPoint slides will be divided each week into the appropriate “Chunks”. We will collectively review this method of delivery after Week #2. Lectures will be streamed in real time as well as recorded and available for download. Please remind me to start and stop the recording as it is not automatic. Initially we will be using Collaborate as our teaching platform. This program is embedded in your iLearn site under Subject Room – three dots on the right will give you a pop up panel – choose “ View all sessions” (as per below)

This will move you to a screen (below) that lists the lecture and each of the tutorials. This is where you will enter Colaborate for both the lecture and your specific tutorial ( see my section on remote learning etiquette later)

This is also where you can access the Coffee and Chat session which will be available each week as a general session everyone is welcome to join. If you wish to chat generally with you fellow students you can do so within the Course Room at the top of the page. 2.

Consultations

Should you want to have a face to face consult we will use Collaborate, Consult rooms will be set up for both Franci and me. We will discuss the logistics in our first lecture.

Once you open the Consultations Tab you will have the option of booking your own appointment. I will publish available consult times for both Franci and I under the Consultations Tab. If you require a time outside those that I have allocated email Franci or me and we can arrange something. 3.

Text Book

As indicated the major text we will use this semester will be “Real Property Law in Queensland” by Wallace, McCrimmon and Weir. The 5th edition of this book has just been published.

As you will also be using this text in Property Law B I strongly suggest you obtain a copy. Due to copyright laws I am severely limited in what I can make available by way of scanned material. I understand it will also be available by way of an E book which may be useful. As you have been advised the Bookshop on campus is no more and you have been directed to Booktopia for your online purchases. Please contact them as soon as possible. Link to their website is herehttps://www.booktopia.com.au/search.ep?keywords=real%20property%20law%20in %20queensland&productType=917504&suggested=L The other option is to acquire it from the publishers, Thomson Reuters, I believe they offer a 15% discount to students. I suggest you compare pricing. A link to the relevant page is here https://legal.thomsonreuters.com.au/real-property-law-in-queensland-5e/productdetail/128237 When we move to personal property securities law, we will be using the “Annotated Personal Property Securities Act” by Harris and Mirzai. Again that may be available in Ebook for those who wish to obtain it but it is not a prescribed text and I will provide extensive materials. 4.

Assessment

Assessment will be as per usual: Tutorial attendance and participation – 20% Mid Semester Skills assessment – 30% End of Semester Examination – 50% 5.

Lecture & Tutorial Etiquette

Potentially we will have over 120 students participating in Lectures some inhouse some online. I will have the assistance of Eva Teng during lectures. She will monitor the chat. The rule for remote attendees is:  

When you join via Collaborate please mute your microphone. You may also turn off your video if you wish to save band width. If you have a question type it into the chat section and Eva will respond or ask me to comment.

The reason for muted mics is that with that number of people with mic’s turned on there will be distracting background noise. It would be appreciated if you would put a photo of yourself on your Collaborate site so that when muted at least I have a face to look at. In remote tutorials we will use the “hands up” function on Collaborate. I don’t want students trying to talk over each other . I think that will be all for now. For my part I intend to make it as seamless as possible. Always stay in touch, one of the things you can lose when learning remotely is the collegiality of other students around you. That is the idea of the coffee break session in Collaborate. It is not designed to be any formal meeting more a casual one to catch up and share information. I look forward to seeing you all on the interweb.
