Grading Rubric for Seminar Critique (Biol 405W) Name: Kathryn-Grace Harvey Seminar critiqued (presenter, title, location): Dr. Taekjip Ha is the Bloomberg Distinguished Professor of Biophysics and Biophysical Chemistry, Biophysics, and Biomedical Engineering at Johns Hopkins University. Part I: Developing Single Molecule Technologies to Study Nanomachines (2016). Single molecule technologies to study nanomachines (Part 1): Taekjip Ha. https://www.ibiology.org/ibioseminars/developing-single-molecule-technologies-studynanomachines.html Grade the seminar in the following areas: • Organization (0-20pts): 20 o Dr. Taekjip Ha was well organized. In his talk she presented a brief introduction about how proteins can be viewed as nanomachines. He then talks about fluorescence and Heisenburg’s Uncertainty Prniciple. After that, he talks about multiple conformations, FRET, then optical trapping. Lastly, he wrapped up his discussion with acknowledgements. • Content (0-20pts): 20 O Dr. Taekjin Ha provided a lot of information about FRET and how it can be used to measure multiple conformational changes. • Subject Knowledge (0-20pts): 20 o Dr. Ha was very knowledgeable about Fluorescence Resonance Energy Transfer (FRET) and how to can be used to study nanomachines. • Graphics (0-20pts): 20 o Ha had about 2-3 images per slide and few moving images. He presented his data in way that was easy to follow. • Eye contact (0-5pts): 5

o Dr. Taekjip Ha engaged with the audience and kept eye contact throughout his presentation. • Elocution (0-5pts): 3 o Ha stumbled his words throughout the entire video. Also, he would use “uh” quite a few times. • Enthusiasm (0-5pts): 5 o Ha seemed a bit stiff in his video. In the second half, he started to loosen up. He used examples such as his favorite soccer player and the famous gangnam-style rap when explaining multiple conformations. When talking about homologous recombination, he made jokes about sex and dating. • Time (0-5pts): 5 o I think that he covered enough information in his talk, which was 28:30 minutes in length. He also has two more parts on FRET/nanomachines. • Overall grade (0-100pts): 98 Briefly summarize: 

Strong points of this presentation – o Overall, Dr. Taekjin Ha was very informative and provided a lot of information about FRET and the research he has done. He was well organized. Dr. Ha opened his presentation by saying how single molecule technologies are changing the way we study and understand nature’s nanomachines. He provided a lot of imagery, which helped as he was explaining DNA and multiple conformations. His humor in the second half of the presentation really kept the audience’s attention. It was interesting when he asked a magazine to publish his and his colleagues’ research. Apparently, many of the cover illustrations that they sent to the magazine did not get approved, which was frustrating to hear. Overall, his presentation provided a ton of information on FRET in just half an hour. I feel that Ha encourages scientists to better understand nature’s complex nanomachines with single molecule technologies. Areas for improvement – o The only area of improvement for Dr. Taekjin Ha would be to work on his elocution. He stumbled across her words but overall, he did a really good job....
