Description

Introduction Shopee is a multinational technology company based in Singapore which mainly focuses on e-commerce. Shopee is the leading e-commerce platform in both Southeast Asia and Taiwan, it first launched in 2015, the platform is tailored for the region which provides customers with an easy, secure and fast online shopping experience through strong payment and fulfilment support. Shopee vision is to provide accessible, convenient, and enjoyable online shopping to the customer every single day on the platform (Shopee Career). This assignment will show Shopee’s organisational structure and its internal activities. Shopee positioning serves internet users across regions by offering a one-stop shopping experience with a wide selection of products, seamless fulfillment services and social community for exploration.

1.0 Shopee’s organisational structure Organisational structure is a system that shows how certain activities are directed in order to attain the organization goals and it also decides how the information flows between levels within the company (Will Kenton 2021). The activities include rules, roles and responsibilities. Shopee is in a functional organization structure in which the organisation is divided into smaller groups based on specialized functional areas such as human resources, public relation, marketing, etc. The board of directors consist of the CEO of Shopee is Chirs Feng who is the highest rank in the company who makes the major corporate decision. The CCO is Junjie Zhuo who is responsible for overseeing compliance within the organization. CPO David Chen and COO Terence Pang who is responsible for overseeing the day to day administrative and operational functions of Shopee. After the c-level in the organization structure will be each of every different functional department such as media production, human resources, business intelligence, public relation and marketing communications and many different departments ( Appendices 1).

2.0 Hiring strategy

Hiring strategy is a formal plan of action implemented by the organization to attempt to successfully identify, recruit and hire qualified candidates in order to fill its open positions. The organization could reach out for recruiting agencies or online platforms to recruit. Shopee has several types of hiring strategies, firstly Shopee makes use of the social media LinkedIn which is a professional social media platform for career growth which is a powerful tool for recruiters to look for the right candidates. There are plenty of jobs posted by Shopee in LinkedIn which are accessible by anyone with a LinkedIn profile (Appendix 2). There is 95% of hiring employers use LinkedIn to reach out to applicants, build connections and present job openings to professionals who are available for the new opportunities (Roger Conner 2019). Second strategy, Shopee posts its job in third party online job seeking platforms such as JobStreet and Indeed which is to target people that don't have a LinkedIn profile and are looking for a job on the website (Appendix 3). The third strategy is that Shopee has its own official website called ShopeeCareer which is a one stop center of open opportunities within Shopee in many different positions in different regions and countries (Appendix 4), with this they able to save the cost from posting job in third party website.

3.0 Employee training Shopee has a strong learning culture as they value learning thus they provide learning and development opportunities for their employees,it has a programme called Shopee Academy for the employee in which they take pride in close partnership with all leaders, teams and individuals in Shopee to co-create learning solutions that work. The comprehensive learning initiatives include general, functional and leadership training that cater to different groups of employees (Shopee Careers). General training focuses on developing essential skills such as communication or creative and innovative thinking for personal and professional effectiveness. Functional training is to broaden and deepen employee knowledge and skills in their roles and functions. As for leadership training,Shopee Academy provides foundational modules for inexperienced leaders as well as advanced modules for experienced leaders (Human Resources 2019). The learning and

development modules take place through an intensive regional onboarding programme for managers. Those managers will attend deep-dive sessions to enhance their understanding of Shopee’s key business processes (Human Resources 2019). Other than that, the academy also offers five different levels of leadership development programmers for Shopee’s leader in different stages and every leader in the organization will participate in tailored two days training programmes every year. The range of programmes includes leadership masterclasses with two hour training courses, panel discussions, learning networking sessions and brown-bag sessions by senior leaders (Human Resources 2019).

4.0 Pay for performance Pay for performance is about the reward in terms of monetary or non monetary reward for the employees as an act of encouragement and to motivate them to work harder for the company as well as for employee retention. Shopee rewards its employees by giving training subsidies as they deepen their skill set through online and external training as an act of encouragement for the employees to learn. Shopee salary structures are depending on the roles in which the one with professional knowledge and skills such as senior planner will have a salary range from RM 3000 to RM 6000. Roles that require little knowledge and skills like customer service representative will have a salary range from RM 1300 to RM 2000. These numbers are just an estimation from a job seeking website hence it may have a different range of salary but it can be said that higher position with higher salary which is a very common salary structure. Other than monetary benefit, Shopee also provides non-monetary rewards for the employee to enjoy the long term effect, there are many benefits for the employee, they are able to enjoy the benefit of having free drinks, free breakfast and dinner for five days a week where they able to have it in the premises and their cafeteria.Furthermore, Shopee are concern of its employee well being thus they provides different types of insurance such as life, dental, health and vision insurance. It also has paternity leave for 10 days and maternity leave for 16 weeks to ensure that the employees are in the right mind or state during work.

5.0 Management Information System Shopee has a strong payment gateway as it provides different payment methods such as credit or debit card payment which only accept locally issued Visa or Mastercard. Secondly, Shopee has its own payment method which is ShopeePay where users can top up their own account and use the money to pay for their purchase. Other than that which is the most common and crucial payment gateway, online banking where the order can be paid via the user's own bank for the online transfer which is a fast and secure payment service. Shopee also offers payment gateway such as cash on delivery but is available for certain shipping channels and it also provides installment plans with user credit cards (Shopee Help Centre). In order for the business operation to remain stable during promotion, Shopee utilized Tencent Cloud Solution to handle the huge amount of traffic due to fluctuating demand of major sales promotions. By utilizing Tencent Cloud Solution, it is able to handle the traffic and helps the retailers to achieve its growth or business transaction with the smooth shopping experience from its stability (Tencent Cloud). Shopee stores or processes all its users’ confidential information in Singapore where their servers are located as well as the central database is operated.

6.0 Company’s infrastructure Shopee network infrastructure has its own intranet for their employees to share information, collaboration and even to enjoy the benefit from the pre order dinner features in the intranet (Shelia Chiang 2020). Shopee office has many facilities that the employees can benefit from which deliver a comfortable and good environment to work where in their office it has in-house masseuse, the employees able to enjoy a free refreshing massage twice a month. Other than that, for those who prefer to relieve stress with food, Shopee has a well-stocked pantry that also provides free staff breakfast every Monday morning (Shelia Chiang 2020). There are also 8 sleeping pods available in the office for a quick recharge.

Conclusion

In conclusion, Shopee functional structure is able to increase productivity as each functional department focuses on their task and the flow of information can be faster and more efficient. Shopee practice different methods for their recruitment in order to look for talents in different ways such as the job seeker who searches from websites and social media.They also create an official website of their own specifically for recruitment. Moreover, Shopee provides a competitive salary range for their employees and attractive benefits which the employees can enjoy such as free food and insurance. Besides that, Shopee uses many management information systems and one of them is the Tencent Cloud Solution to stabilize the platform from large traffic during promotion. Last but not least, Shopee has a friendly, interesting workplace and comfortable working environment that the employee can enjoy while working which will increase their productivity and perhaps it could help with the employee retention.
