ANTH305 Professor Afzal June 3, 2019 Short Essay 1 In Barbara Myerhoff’s novel and film, Number Our Days, Myerhoff studies the stories and lives of elderly Jews in Venice, California. In the ethnography, Dr. Myerhoff explores the daily lives of elderly Jewish residents living in the community, often referred to as the “Center,” which is a place where the Jewish elderly interact. Based on her fieldwork with elderly Jewish women in Venice, anthropologist Myerhoff developed the concept of ‘Domestic Religion’. ‘Domestic religion’ centers on involvement of men and women in their religion and how both play different roles in Jewish faith. Jewish women’s obligations and responsibilities are to be a wife, mother, and keeper of the house.
