Description

Lauren Rorabaugh CMM November 8, 2020 Title: Should puppy mills be illegal? General purpose: to persuade Specific purpose: to demonstrate the cruelty of puppy mills, along with the reasons they are still legal. Introduction: Puppy mills are extremely common in the United States, and are the source of very much suffering and animal cruelty. There is an extreme overpopulation of animals here, much of it due to puppy mills overproducing animals. This overpopulation subsequently leads to too many animals in shelters, with many being euthanized. Additionally, these puppy mills are still legal, even though they are the source of many animal cruelty cases. Puppy mills need to become illegal in order to decrease the suffering of these animals, along with the extreme overpopulation, and the way that they trick people into buying animals who have been badly bred. Body: 1. Puppy mills often host dozens, if not hundreds, of animals, mainly dogs, crammed into small cages and forced to give birth until they can no longer. The focus of these places is simply to earn money. Paws.org shares that these puppies are treated like, “cash crops”. a. There are many issues with puppy mills, with many relating to: i.

Small cages with little shelter

ii.

Bad health, such as starvation

iii.

Constantly bred

b.

Although these puppies are clearly very adorable, they likely have extensive health problems due to inbreeding, as well as likely being extremely expensive.

2. The United States has a major dog and cat overpopulation problem. According to dosomething.org states that around 7.6 million pets enter shelters every year, with about 3.9 million being dogs, and 3.4 million being cats. Of that 7.6 million, about 2.7 million of those are euthanized annually. Although much of this is due to owner responsibility, mainly those who don’t spay or neuter their pets, another majority of this issue is due to these puppy mills. When animals are overproduced in this manner, people choose to buy these animals instead of going to a reputable breeder or a rescue. This leads to many other animals living in shelters and being euthanized. a. According to the National Humane Education Society, there are typically between 50 to 1,000 dogs in each puppy mill.

3.

Obviously, most people do not support animal cruelty. This is why puppy mill owners falsely advertise to them, and sell to pet stores. People often feel they are rescuing these puppies by taking them from the store, but instead, that is supporting the cruelty toward these animals. a. The International Society for Animal Rights suggest that about 90% of dogs sold in pet stores are from puppy mills. b. CBS News suggests that Colorado is currently getting ready to pass legislature to ban stores from selling puppy mill puppies, and California and Maryland are both states that have already banned this. There is currently great progress in the way of stores banning puppy mill puppy sales, but there need to be more bans on

puppy mills nationwide. c. Additionally, Maine is also doing a similar thing. They are working on legislation to ban puppy mill sales, according to MFOA. Conclusion: There are clearly many obvious reasons as to why puppy mills should no longer be legal in the United States. Since the dogs often do have food and water, these places are often permissible and legal, even though there is clear cruelty in this. The extensive health problems, excessive costs, the cruelty it supports, and all the other homeless animals truly demonstrate how detrimental it can be to buy a puppy from a pet store, or from a puppy mill itself.
