Summary

First discussion post of the semester- defining deviance...

Description

At what point does normal behavior become deviant behavior? What qualifies behavior as being deviant? You may wish to draw upon specific examples from the programs viewed for the "Deviance in Action" activity. Post your own ideas, and in your responses to classmates, note similarities and differences between your understanding of deviant behavior and theirs.

I think we can all agree that we differ from person to person, holding our own quirks and individuality within ourselves, but at what point does the behavior turn deviant? Perhaps when a behavior, or pattern of behaviors reach an unnecessary level of danger or risk, either to yourself and/or others. Behaviors could also be considered deviant once the behavior is no longer encouraged or accepted- or up to the point of being accepted and encouraged. Deviance is defined as “actions or behaviors that violate informal social norms or formally-enacted rules” (Libretexts, 2021). Personally, I would define deviants in a negative way, categorizing these aberrant behaviors as unwanted, destructive behavior. Generally, I would not label an unfamiliar or socially odd job as ‘deviant’, but I do understand why others might after reviewing the "Deviance in Action" activity. Upon viewing the examples of deviant behavior within the "Deviance in Action" activity, I ended up choosing Deadliest Catch, as I didn’t understand how crabbing could be considered deviant. Once I reviewed an episode and read up more about the risks of crabbing in these Alaskan waters, I understood how this could be considered deviant. Coming from an abnormal, unique standpoint, this show and career pass the line on taking risks. From hypothermia to drowning, risks lurk around every corner. Holding the knowledge that the closest hospital stands miles and miles away from a wounded worker, or potential drowning victim, and still venturing out into the literally deep, dark abyss, one must think they are unusual, and I dare say, deviant.
