Cierra Dunken Professor Gunty SOC-220 23 February 2020 Social Deviance Worksheet Social Deviance contributes to social problems by the inconsistent behavior of social norms, challenging social order, and illegal acts. There are many people today that want to stand up against social problems such as: poverty, inequality, child abuse and racism. However, according to the Functionalist Perspective on the anomie theory, people will go against social norms and sometimes-even illegal acts to reach these cultural goals. When public officers ignore the people’s issue, some turn to deviant behavior for their voices to be heard. For instance, in 1992 a few white policemen were seen on camera beating an African American as a form of racial hatred. People in LA were angry and started causing riots and burning buildings to end racism specifically in the police force. Social deviance perpetuates child abuse on a micro level by how the child’s interaction with their parent can influence their decisions and lifestyle later on in life. This article stated that, “based on the parents' pattern of behavior and children's physical and emotional attachment to their parents, children can develop healthily and become self-motivating; however, children also can become maladaptive and even destructive to themselves and/or others” (Green, 2012). Child abuse, a negative interaction with a child’s parent- can have a huge affect on their behavior/decisions growing up. On a macro level, abusing a child can enable them to have severe trust/social issues, which may lead to them making bad choices later on in life. How a child grows up can determine the kind

of friends they have, grades, health, and overall decisions. Social deviance in parents will ultimately affect their children’s life in a negative way. “Child abuse and insecure models of attachment typically result in a child developing low self-esteem, interpersonal problems, increased rates of depression, anxiety and substance abuse.” (Riggs; Sahl; Greenwald; Atkison; Paulson; Ross, 2007) Deviance and crime arouse negative reactions throughout society that can ensure people to obey social norms. You cannot necessarily control people act, because people have freedom and free will. Humans naturally want to be free and express themselves in whatever way they want. When trying to keep social deviance under control, there may be more deviance that arises. But trying to put more control over social deviance will never work because people don’t want to be controlled. So, a solution to social deviance could be to have less control over social behavior and having a more open and accepting society. This has been proposed in the past by how the government has tried to control gun laws. The Gun Control Act of 1968, showed that the government were trying to control the rate of crimes that were used with firearms. This backlashed and crime rates went up. This shows that when the government tried to control a situation, society went against it (Anderson, 2013).
