Tutorial Section #

Purpose The purpose of this particular assignment is to challenge yourself to begin to think like a social psychologist, to look at the world around you and ask yourself how social psychological analyses have the potential to help you better understand what you observe. Instructions 1. Prior to final tutorial, you will complete a social observation journal (see below) and then assess your observations by applying your understanding of social psychological concepts. 2. You will submit via email your journal and assignment to your TA before the start of the final lecture. 3. In tutorial, you will have a discussion with your peers to share your observations and assessment. 4. After the discussion of students’ observations, the TA will provide instructions of what to complete next.

PART A: Keeping a Journal for 2 days: Social Psychological Observations of yourself and Media The textbook introduces you to the field of social psychology, and to the kinds of questions that social psychologists ask. Social psychology is defined as “the branch of psychology concerned with the way individuals’ thoughts, feelings, and behaviours are influenced by others.” The purpose of this particular assignment is to challenge yourself to begin to think like a social psychologist, to look at the world around you and ask yourself how social psychological analyses have the potential to help you better understand what you observe. Please abide by social/personal distancing guidelines. You do not need to leave your home or surroundings to complete this assignment. Observations of yourself (one day): You will keep a journal (1-2 pages) in which you are to record any and all observations of yourself. The observations of yourself will focus on your behaviors, your attitudes, your feelings, and your own thoughts then explain how these observations are relevant to social psychology. That is, what social psychological questions can you ask as you observe your thoughts, feelings and behaviours? Observations of media (another day): You will keep a journal (1-2 pages) in which you are to record any and all observations of media (e.g., TV, movies, news, etc.). The observation of the media will focus on behaviors, apparent attitudes, apparent feelings of others, and your own thoughts, feelings, and behaviors about what you observe. Then you will explain how these observations are relevant to social psychology. That is, what social psychological questions can you ask as you observe media? Notes. - Observations do not have to be two consecutive days. In other words, you do not need to do your journal back to back days. For example, you can do a Tuesday and a Thursday or a Wednesday and Saturday, etc. - Given the current circumstances, you should have your journal typed to send to your TA. Remember to share things you’re comfortable with your TA reading. - OBSERVATION ONLY – do not interact as it may influence your observation - Each journal should be at least 1 page long. Part B: Review your journal entries and identify social psychological phenomenon in your observations. For each day of observation (of yourself and media) - You should identify at least 3-4 social psychological concepts (use text and lecture notes) from each day of observation. - Please be specific in your responses and clearly explain how the observation reflects the concept. - Concepts are typically in bold-face font in the textbook. There are also terms discussed in lecture. Note. You will want to read Chapter 13 of your textbook and refer to lecture notes to identify and explain concepts you observed....
