Social Work 2100 An Integrative Multidimensional Framework
Theoretical framework: offers an explanation for a specific phenomenon or a systematic account of the relationships among variables associated with that phenomenon.
Ecological model: assumes that health and well-being are affected by interaction among multiple determinants including biology, behavior, and environment.
Theory: an orderly, integrated set of statements that describes, explains and predicts behavior.
Components of Psychological Theoretical Formulations:
Psychodynamic components: difficulties with trust or having to depend on others, difficulties with control, difficulties with self-esteem, difficulties with relationships.
Cognitive components: automatic dysfunctional thoughts, negative core beliefs, cognitive distortions (errors in logic).
Behavioral components: behavioral reinforcement of maladaptive behavior, something that extinguishes a desired behavior, paired association between a behavior and an environmental cue that initiates the behavior.
Integration of 4 Ps in Biopsychosocial Model:
Predisposing factors (why me?): biophysical: genetic loading, family history. Psychological: immature defense mechanisms. Social: poverty and social isolation.
Precipitating factors (why now?): biophysical: temperament. Psychological: recent loss. Social: stressors at school.
Perpetuating factors (why does it continue?): biophysical: poor response to medication. Psychological: distorted self-concept. Social: not able to attend counseling because of transportation issues.
Protective factors (what can I rely on?): biophysical: family history of response to treatment. Psychological: insightful. Social: faith as a social support and Church is a resource.
The 5 Ps of Case Formulation:
Preventing problem: what is the client’s problem(s)? Provide a list.
Predisposing factors: what factors over the course of the person’s life contributed to the development of the problem(s)?
Precipitants: why seeking help now? Are there any triggers for problem(s)?
Perpetuating factors: what factors are reinforcing or maintaining the problem(s)?
Protective or positive factors: what strengths can the client draw on? Are there social supports and/or community resources or assets?
