Assignment about social influences....

Description

Society can influence our behavior and how we interact with others. We tend to adapt to our environment and how things work around us. Conformity is a type of influence the society or group can change our view.

Some of the thing I feel pressured to conform to are what to wear when going to church, my family church specifically has a usual dress code which personally I do not like, because of conformity, I have to dress like them in order to fit in properly. Another thing I feel pressured to conform to is the language we use to communicate in my hometown, where I am from it is almost compulsory to speak to each other in our dialect, unfortunately for me I am not fluent in it, I feel a bit shame because my people sort of discriminate me for it, when I cannot reply in my own language. I am approaching this issue by putting in more effort to learn the language.

Have you known others who conform to pressure from others or society? What did they do? How did they deal with the pressure? A case of someone I know who conform to pressure from others is a classmate from high school. Joyce was her name she came in as a new student, she was very smart, she started off shy but after getting used to the environment, we realize that she was very likable and friendly. She started noticing and watching some group of girls in the class who were somewhat popular and cool in the school. It seemed she enjoyed the company and vibes they gave; it was obvious that she wanted to join them and become popular like them too, a public figure in the school.

She delt with the issue by taking the advice of the school counselor, she would have lost her focus, her grade would have been affected badly. So, she took the advice and focused on her studies.

Discuss the importance of pro-social behavior and altruism in your society or cultural tradition. Generally, practicing altruism and pro-social behavior is good and beneficial to any society. Being concern for the well being of not only yourself but for other around you can improve quality of life. Practicing these behaviors has so much importance in my society because it can create better social communication, improve physical health and mind, promotes good relationship with others and so on. It is also important for social support benefit “Having social support can be crucial for getting through difficult times. Research has shown that social support can have a powerful impact on many aspects of wellness, including reducing the risk of loneliness, alcohol use, and depression”. (Kendra. 2020).
