Bianca Boucher 2-1-2021 Pioneers of Psychology

During the film, Dr. Todd Grande spoke to a client who hadn’t been feeling like themselves lately. The first concept that stood out to me was asking the client the miracle question. This stood out because this question causes the client to imagine their life without their current burden, and I feel like by imagining their life this way, it may inspire the client more towards working to get past their problems. The second concept that stood out to me was how the psychologist had the client walk him through what a typical day in the client’s life is. I feel like this is a really good way to help identify what certain things are causing distress to a person because when you are actually experiencing it, it is not always clear what the root of the problem is or what exactly is getting under your skin. The third concept that stood out to me was how after identifying the source of what was making the client feel “off” or not like his usual self, the psychologist was able to identify his feelings as being related to symptoms of social anxiety. I liked how this really tied things up and gave the psychologist a basis of where to begin with solving the issues at hand. I also liked how the miracle question overall leads the focus of the discussion to something more positive instead of dwelling over the issues the client is facing. However I also somewhat dislike solution focused therapy to a certain point, because it does not allow the client to work through their feelings as much. I think it would be wonderful for some people but probably not fitting for all, because some people may feel the need to talk over past issues and focus on them first in order to begin moving forward to implementing solutions....
