Research Participation SONA System Guidelines for SOSC 1960 & SOSC 1980 I.

OVERVIEW - URL: http://hkust-psychlab.sona-systems.com - Functions of the system:  Sign up for research studies  Track the number of credits you have gained - All email correspondence will be sent to your HKUST email account (with the sender name “Psychology Lab at HKUST”). Please make sure that correspondence from this system will not end up in your junk mail folder.

GETTING STARTED - Login  An account has been created for you. You will receive the user ID and password at your HKUST email account. If you have not received this email, please check your junk mail folder prior to contacting Psychology Lab.  Once you have your login information, go onto the above URL and enter your user ID and password to login (see Figure 1).

How to change your password?  After you have logged in, you will see the main menu. Choose “My Profile” from the toolbar, where you can change your password (see Figure 2).

Figure 2: My Profile - How to retrieve your lost password?  If you have lost your password, please click the “Forgot Password” button at the login page. Your password will be emailed to your HKUST email account.

III. ANNOUNCEMENTS OF NEW STUDIES - The system will notify you of any new studies via email. Please make sure that these email notifications will not be sent to your junk mail folder. Please visit the system from time to time to keep track of new studies. - Through this system, you can sign up for studies. Likewise, you can cancel your sign-ups through the system.

How to view studies? To view a list of ongoing studies, click “Studies” or “View available studies” from the toolbar.  Studies with available time slots for sign-up will have “Timeslots Available” listed next to the name of the study (see Figure 3).  To learn more about a study, click on the study name and you will be directed to the study information page where you can find information concerning the study prerequisites, credits, duration and researchers’ contacts (see Figure 4).

- How to sign up for studies?  Click “View Time Slots for This Study” on the study information page and choose a time slot that is convenient for you. Click “Sign Up” (see Figure 5).  After you click “Sign Up”, the time and location of the study will be shown. You will receive an email confirmation as well.  If you are trying to sign up for a time slot which has a time conflict with another study, the system will give you a warning (although the system does not prohibit a second sign-up).  You may only sign up for 1 time slot for each particular study.  You will receive an email reminder for each study you have signed up 24 hours before the study begins.

- How to cancel a sign-up?  

 

If you wish to cancel a signed-up slot, choose “My Schedule/Credits” from the tool bar. At the “My Schedule/Credits” page, you can only cancel your sign-ups for the studies with the “Cancel” button next to them. For most studies, you can only cancel a sign-up at least 24 hours in advance. Please read the cancelation policy of each study carefully. Once you click “Cancel” for a sign-up, you will see a confirmation page (see Figure 6). Click “Yes, I want to cancel” to cancel your sign-up. You will receive an email confirmation as well.

IV. TRACKING YOUR PROGRESS - Track your progress by choosing the “My Schedule/Credits” from the toolbar (see Figure 7).  



When you are granted credits for studies, you will receive email notifications from the system. It usually takes 7 working days after the entire study has been completed before all credits can be updated. However, if you have any doubts regarding your credit arrangement, please contact Psychology Lab at [email protected] or 2358-5050. Even though this system keeps track of your progress, it is your responsibility to keep the “Participant’s Receipt” after participating in a study. In case of disputes, you will need to provide the “Participant’s Receipt” to prove your participation.
