Description

In the late 1960’s two men by the name of Herb Keller and Rollin King sat in a San Antonio bar and envisioned a low-cost friendly air service that would cater to Houston, San Antonio, and Dallas. Eventually, the company has grown to service most of the United States and is the leading low-cost airline service. Initially, the company was called Air Southwest Co but was changed to Southwest Airlines in the 1970’s. Since the start of the company the mission and vision of Southwest airlines has been clear and its reputation speaks for itself. The mission statement of Southwest Airlines states that its purpose is to connect people to what’s important in their lives through friendly, reliable, and low-cost air travel. Southwest Airlines has proven that they hold true to their mission statement by valuing their customers and employees. The vision statement of Southwest Airlines states the company plans to be the worlds most loved, most efficient, and most profitable airline. In order to accomplish their vision Southwest Airlines has mastered the planning, organizing, leading, and controlling dimensions of the P-OL-C framework. In order for a company to be successful one of the first steps is planning effectively. This includes planning for economic conditions, customers, and competition. Planners must establish goals or objectives and then strategically put in plans to reach those goals and objectives. Southwest airlines rely on their management team, frontline employees, administrators, and executives to contribute equally as a team. One strategic plan that Southwest Airlines has implemented was low-cost air service. The company accomplished this by offering only economy seating and no charge for bags. Once a plan has been set the organizational function is next. This part of the P-O-L-C framework allows for jobs to be assigned to areas such as customers, human resources, and the product. Allowing for an organized team of employees for each task is vital to a business running smoothly. Leading is the next step in the framework which allows those in charge to use motivation and effective communication to ensure business needs are being met. The founder of Southwest Airlines, Herb Kelleher, has created an enjoyable culture for customers and employees, alike. With great incentives for employees such as SWAG points for attendance, Herb Kelleher was able to organize a family culture that motivated employees to attend and excel in the workplace. The last step of the P-O-L-C framework is controlling. This step sets procedures such as establishing standards, code of ethics, training, performance evaluations, and maintaining a level of expected quality. During this step, managers should use motivation and effective communication to help employees stay on a path towards success for themselves and the overall success of the company. Inconclusion, Southwest Airlines has become one of the world’s leading air service and the world’s most low-cost air service. Southwest airlines have been a leading example of an ethically sound company who stays true to their mission and vision. If you have been one of the 100 million passengers of Southwest airlines then there is no doubt that you’ve seen their mission and vision statement in full effect....
