Description

BACKGROUND INFORMATION ON THE SPEAKER AND THE SPEECH Aaron Beverly emerged as the winner of the Toastmasters International Speech Contest in August 2019, the annual public speaking competition that includes more than 30,000 competitors worldwide. Performing the speech entitled “An Unbelievable Story,” Aaron provided a humorous take on the heavy subject of race and the importance of “acceptance despite difference.” In June 2018, Aaron Beverly travelled to India for his friends’ wedding — only to discover that he was the only Black guest. He tried his best to fit in. He bought traditional Indian attire. He talked with other guests. And when the groomsmen asked him to participate in a traditional wedding game during the ceremony, he said yes. The 30-year-old Philadelphia native, Aaron Beverly recently took the “unbelievable story” of his nerve-wracking experience, and turned it into a speech that helped him win the prestigious title as the 2019 World Champion of Public Speaking. VERBAL ASPECT The speaker uses vivid language that can evoke the senses and is language that arouses the sensations of smelling, tasting, seeing, hearing, and feeling. Aaron Beverly’s speech was brilliant and had all the elements of a spy movie. In “Unbelievable Story”, the speaker wants the audience to sense the situation when he participates in the traditional wedding game where he must protect the groom’s shoes from the bridesmaids. He explains how the game works clearly to the audience. To create that audience experience, he crafts language that emphasizes these elements. When using vivid language, you’re trying to bring those sensations to life in a way that can create a vivid experience for your audience. The structure of his speech is about as simple as it gets. This is not a bad thing. It had an opening that jumped right into a story. He only had one story. He made his point and gave a call to action. For this speech, He used the words that he normally uses in everyday conversations. Beverly said some people try to sound smarter or more dramatic than they normally are. “You don’t need those overzealous gestures,” he stressed. “You don’t need to have flowery words. I would just say be your authentic self.” He delivered his speech through storytelling, in the form of anecdotes and narrative illustrations, which are a powerful tool as a public speaker. For better or worse, audiences are likely to remember anecdotes and narratives long after a speech’s statistics are forgotten. Human beings love stories and will often will walk away from a speech moved by or remembering a powerful story or example.

OVERALL SPEECH PRESENTATION The speech was interesting. It has a gripping story, gradually built towards the climax. It was perfect, it had a mix of humour and emotions, entertaining and passes a very powerful message. All delivered in his own natural style. A very timely message for what is going on today! That is what makes a winning speech I believe. I don't know if I ever will be as good but I keep improving. Though he mined the tale for laughs, Beverly also tapped into its cultural relevance. The shoe game, he said, was a fun way for the bride’s and groom’s families and their respective friends—people from a mix of cultural backgrounds—to get to know each other and make everyone feel welcome. Society

needs to do more of that, said Beverly, who issued a challenge to the audience: Be open-minded and compassionate toward people who are different from you—a mission to take very seriously....
