STRATEGIC LEADERSHIP: MAHABHARATA By Lt Gen PG Kamath (Veteran) Whatever examples the superior sets: Is always followed by the rest. What by actoos the great ioitate: Ordioary people will theo imitate. -Bhagwadgita III/211 Introduction 1. In the Western World, the Lore of War originated in 8th Century BCE in Greece. It was Homer, who wrote the frst epic poem 'Iliad' the essence of it was honour, heroism and valour. The Hero of the epic poem was 'Achilles', who opted out of the War in between and subsequently re-joined the war for honour in order to avenge the death of his friend, Patroclus. Achilles was also the hero of Alexander the Great, who eulogized him as his ideal. Two centuries later it was Sun Tzu who wrote a treatse on warfare in his famous book 'The Art of War'. More than 2700 years before Homer, Kurukshetra War was fought and Ved Vyas wrote the famous epic, Mahabharata; a treasure trove on 'Philosophy of War and Kingship'.2 Though many ratonalists have said that it was a fgment of imaginaton of bards and saints, but the underlying knowledge, wisdom and geopolitcs are so profound, brocaded with so many details and thousands of characters; it defes the theory of poetc fascinaton of a fertle mind. The pieces of arrowheads and potery found at Kurukshetra, discovery of lost city of Dwarka, inscriptons in various temples, existence of geographical places mentoned; all establish the truth behind the epic. One always wonder; why war and qualites of heroism, sacrifce and skill at arms have become subject of human fantasy and adulaton from tmes immemorial? It is probably that war blossoms the nobility inherent in a person? As the proverb goes; war uses the best in a human being to do the worst of things that humanity can imagine'. History of wars has been the history of mankind. 1...
