Academic and Professional Networking During my academic and professional career, I’ve come to the conclusion that it’s nearly impossible to navigate this competitive and hectic world alone. I value the experiences and knowledge others possess and I believe it’s imperative to surround ourselves with individuals who will set us up for success, mentally, and academically. Michelle Obama once said “Success isn’t about how much money you make; it’s about the differences you make in people’s lives.” (Michelle Obama, 2012) In the time I will be completing this program I’ve identified two people that I believe will make a difference in my academic career. The two people I’ve identified are my student advisor Michelle Stoner and my previous professor and current mentor Katherine Derring. Dr. Katherine Deerring is an amazing individual and an amazing professor. Her support in my education during my nursing career was outstanding and something I’m grateful for. During my Pediatric course I was struggling with personal issues that affected my academic success, and Dr.Katherine was extremely supportive in teaching the material, and personal tutoring that I’m extremely grateful for. Her support continued after my academics, encouraging me to apply myself in my professional career, and to pursue my academics. Dr. Katherine Derring is the Program Director for Care Nursing Programs and Doctor of Nursing Programs at LSU Health New Orleans (LSUhealth,2021). I believe someone this professionally and academically successful will help elevate my academic and professional nursing career and be a support system to help expand my knowledge and my education. After pursuing my NP with Walden University, I’ve been personally invited to apply to her Doctor of Nursing Program to advance my career into research. I’m confident as a mentor Katherine Deering will be an amazing support system and networking partner. Another support system I believe is essential to my success at Walden University is Michelle Stoner. After speaking with her, I believe her

supportive and motivating demeanor will be important to my academic success. Navigating Online education is very difficult, especially while advancing my professional career. During my nursing education, due to COVID my last semester was taken online, a transition that I identified as a weak point in my academic career that affected my grades drastically. After identifying that weak point I made it a must to be prepared and ask questions to ensure that I stay organized and informed about assignments, school support systems, as well as administrative tasks. Michelle Stoner is always available when needed and has been very informative and motivating in ensuring tasks are complete. As well as, identifying weak points with me to address during my academic career, I believe Michelle is an important professional individual that will help me succeed during this program. Lastly I’ve identified one group that I believe is important to my academic success, and that is “Walden MSN Facebook Group”. I can’t find another professional group to help than your own colleagues, our current group has been extremely supportive and giving advice along the way. The MSN group has identified issues with assignments and addressed it after speaking with the professor and we’ve all been connecting with Students in our local area. I believe being surrounded with such an amazing support system helps with studying and identifying key items to focus on. I’m happy to have Identified these people and groups, and going forward I’ll be adding more connections to professional networks and one of those people will be a Psych DNP or Psych MD. My professional goals are to open a behavioral health clinic and it's important for both my clinical hours and my education experience to network with someone successful and invested in the Psych Mental Health world. With all this amazing support I am also blessed to have access to student support at Walden University as well as academic advisors,faculty and IT support (Walden University,2020a).
