Group project on Leadership in Social Work ...

Description

Slide 1: Enhance Social Work Practice.. · Awareness Being aware of the different levels of local and federal involvement and responsibilities is vital to being apart of Leadership in a disaster as a Social Worker. Knowing who to collaborate with and where to get aid for your community is vital in a situation like Hurricane Katrina. · Micro to Macro Like Venessa stated earlier, moving from micro to macro this is very important to being a Social Worker because when presented with situations like disasters the level of care expands from our individual clients to being involved in the community and government on a larger scale. Being aware of the changes that occur and the services that need to be provided is important and useful to the community that you serve as a whole · Seat at the Table Having a seat at the table means that as a Social Working and a respected and relevant figure of the community that brings our specialty to the citizens and the community as a whole. We have to be abreast of the planning process and the systems so that we can ensure that the needs of the clients are remembered and highlighted during the planning phase. To accomplish this we have to be knowledgeable about the things I stated before with in awareness and micro as well as macro social work Slide 2: How Do We Do This? · Education We have to educate ourselves on the policies the processes. Educating the community leaders and bring up things that may be over looked and we have to educate the people of the community. Empowering the community though direct involvement and participation Also, lessons learned from other parts of the country as well around the world with help enhance our knowledge

· Abilene Paradox We discussed the Abilene Paradox and this is an example of how not to go about making a difference in the Social Work practice. Knowing what this is and avoiding it at all cost will put you ahead. When we look at the Hurricane Katrina disaster we know that there was noone willing to stand up and say what was right or wrong and be a leader in the since of, ensure that the human capita was protected everyone went along for the ride and didn’t stand up for what was right or make their voices heard until it was too late. We want to avoid that at all cost. The planning after Katina for disasters really ramped up at all levels of leadership. So with that step up and speak up because it is for the people and communities we serve.

· Policies and Protocols With policies and protocols come preparation and rehearsals. Having a plan that is laid out and understandable is very important. Know that there are certain actions that need to happen and when they need to happen is equally important and what brings it together are the preparations that are put into place before the disaster whether they are natural or man made disasters. Finally, rehearsals and drills. In the Army we say that we train as we fight. When I was stationed in Columbia SC. The community and the Army base there had an agreement that if a hurricane or man made disaster was to hit that area they would work together. With this there was a written agreement that said exactly who would do what and when. We had several exercises yearly to activate the Hospital Incident Command System (HICS) with in our hospital and then we had exercises with the city, state, federal system to test those as well. Slide 3: Taking it to the Next Level! · The Bigger Picture Knowing what the bigger picture is and taking the steps to ensure that your community is prepared for it culturally, socially, and psychologically is what a leader in our field during after and before a disaster will enhance the field of social work

· Comfort Zone The social work file is know for counseling and helping individuals in clinical setting, not for being leaders and involved in leadership roles in the community to help plan and prepare for disasters. So coming out of the micro practice, the things that most are comfortable with, and stepping outside of our comfort zones and into a new area of Social Work will enhance the social worker and make them diverse in the field. Leadership Role I will leave you with this: According to Mathbor (2007). The preamble of the NASW Code of Ethics explicitly state: “The Primary mission of the social work profession is to enhance the well-being of and help meet the basic needs of all people, with particular attention to the needs and empowerment of people who are vulnerable, oppressed, and living in poverty” This is what makes social workers leaders and puts is in that role we have to ensure that as professionals we prioritize and develop sufficient disaster management to met that mission!...
